Help, Dead speedometer!!!

Can someone help me figure out why my speedometer will not work. Also when I am driving the transmission will shift in and out of overdrive. I have had the place that reuilt my transmission run diagnostics on it and they said they could not get any readings. I am wondering if anyone out there can steer me in how to pinpoint the problem. Maybe if someone has the AE program they could get to the bottom of this. I live in Salt Lake City, UT and I could meet you where you live. I am going on the deer hunt in a week and need to get emissions and inspection done before October 16th.

Sure sounds like that VSS is suspect, don't it?

I'll agree too. Sounds like a new VSS is called for here. It's the sensor on top of the rear diff. Some parts stores call it an ABS sensor, but it's the one for the rear pumpkin. Seems like they're around $20. You might take yours out and try cleaning it first. Sometimes that will do the trick. You'll need to wipe the dirt from around the sensor and use a 10mm socket to remove the bolt holding it in.

The ABS light goes out shortly after starting the truck. I changed the sensor in the pumpkin and it had no effect on the speedometer. Does the VSS sensor have any effect on whether the torque convertor locks up when towing, because the O/D light on the shift selector will start flashing when pulling a load up a hill ?
