X3 on the Dana 50, it should say on the axle housing or on the gear tag.

'99 F250 I think makes it 100% likely it's a Dana 50.

I remember shopping around when I got my '01 and I thought somewhere in 2002 they started with the Dana 60's, but not sure on that.

Nope, Dana 50 cover is the same as the Dana 60.

The Dana 50 (at least, in the Superduty solid axle) uses what looks like the entire Dana 60 housing, but with a 8.5" ring gear diameter (same as the 44, but not sure if it's really a "dana 44" ring gear because the Dana part numbers are different). The Dana 60 uses a 9.75".

However, I do not think the housing itself is the same between the 50 and 60. They are machined differently for the internal parts.

I'm pretty sure that a Dana 44 has a 8.75" ring gear, a D50 has a 9.25, and a D60 has a 9.75, unless its an 05 or newer truck with 4.30 or lower gears, then it uses the "Super 60" with a 10" ring gear.

Dana axles are difficult. They make some d44 that are not off the shelf stuff like in the vette, the iszuzu rodeo (spelling) and the nissan titan. They are close to a regular housing... Then dodge has a 60 a 61 and they are close in spec but not interchangeable. Then there is a 70 and a 71. At a glance they all look a lot alike the dana 44 was offered in 8lug as was the d60, d61, d70, d71.
I have never had my hands on a dana 50 and a dana 60 to actually compare though. I have heard of the super 60 but I believe it will interchange with a 60 still.

Found some interesting info here:

http://www2.dana.com/pdf/XGI.pdf

But found ring gear diameters here:

http://www.precisiongear.com/dana44.htm - 8.5"

Precision Gear - Dana 50 Ring and Pinion Gear Sets - 9"

Precision Gear - Dana 60 Ring and Pinion Gear Sets - 9.75"
