I saw on the evening news tonight that there are suspension issues on 1997 and 1998 Expeditions, that are being looked at. (I was in a bit of shock that I was seeing my car on the TV screen with mention of a recall, and I didn't get whether it was an announcement by Ford, or the NHTSB)
But the gist of it was that the suspension is being investigated, and could possibly lead to a recall.
I have heard of the recall but have never seen the news for myself. I just bought a 1997 E.B. with a 5.4L and I work at a Honda dealership where I purchased it as a used vehicle. Well when before I bought it I was notified by my boss of a "popping" noise from the rear suspension. I decided to put it up on the lift to see what the hell the noise was...the rear sway bar end link had broken and seperated from where it attaches to the frame. I was just curious if this was the same problem....or something different.....it sure did handle a whole lot better when I fixed it. The part was only $15 from the local dealership. But I just didn't know if this was the same thing or not.
I heard at work that something was on the news about a recall. Any idea what network aired the report? I just checked the ALLDATA website and nothing is posted yet. Will keep an eye out for more info.
Chuck, this thread was originally started about a year ago. I think the recall you heard about is the General/Continental tire recall affecting Expys and Navis.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Oct-02 AT 10:28 AM (EST)]I just bought a 97 EB 5.4 and when I am in reverse and am backing up it sounds like a vibrating type of noise or just kind of sluggish, almost like the parking brake is halfway on. Someone told me that it was normal because that what you get with the Detroit LS diff. I would like to know if anyone has run into this type of problem when backing up. It is fine going forward?
A buddy of mine purchased a '97 abount a year ago with a clunk problem in the rear. It ended up being a worn control arm bushing.
On my 2000, I'm also experiencing a clunk on moderated bumpy roads and after crawling under the truck and examining the drivers side bottom shock mount, the rubber is completely gone, causing a metal in metal clunk.
I have a 97' Expy, XLT, 5.4, and after helping my girlfriend move, I noticed a clunking sound from the back end, after crawling under it, it was the left rear swaybar link, it came off the rubber on the frame mount end, I removed the link, and re-installed it, and added a big washer so it cant slide off again, so far so good, no noise, and it has been about 3 months since then.
Just pulled the boat yesterday ( 18' Glastron 165 HP Mercruiser) about 2800 lbs, with 4 guys in the Expy, and it did very well, I like this rig,,,
Lets Just see if we all get a recall notice !!
