I have a 95 Bronco, 351W, which has begun shifting erratically. It will hang in 1st gear, then slam into 2nd, about 3000rpm. It seems to be constantly hunting for the right gear to be in. This is while driving in the city. If I floor it, it has normal shifting. Began after the battery went dead and recharged it. Been about 200 miles since that. Tested and replaced the TPS, and it is slightly less erratic, but still present. The trans is a Jasper rebuild with about 1500 miles on it. The truck was doing the same thing and toasted the previous transmission.
Any Ideas? I have tested and confirmed good the :
IAC valve, H20 temp sensor, Air Charge Temp Sensor, MAP, EGR Sensor, O2 Sensor. The speed sensor was replaced about a year ago.
does your speedo work? have you pulled codes?? is your OD light blinking? is your abs light blinking?
what size tires are you running also. have you confirmed that the fluid level is full. you should also pull the sensor out of the rear diff and clean it off and reinstall it.
The OD On/Off flashes occasionally, but goes away quickly. Trans fluid is full, no ABS light, only a check engine light that has been on for years, and the dealer cant make sense of the flashing lights. I will pull the speed sensor and clean it off. I am starting to hear a whine / growl from the rear end. I had it rebuilt about 60K miles ago, but I have done a lot of towing, mostly with a 8K pound trailer. So, there may be metal shavings in the speed sensor.
I will post my findings later.
Stock size tires, just class e rating for heavy hauling
Thanks

wow thats seriously overloading the bronco and very hard on the 8.8. I suspect your issue is with the rear sensor and contamination due to burnt fluid and metal. stop taking the bronco to the dealer also. pull codes yourself and check out Ford Fuel Injection
do you have an aftermarket trans cooler and tranny temp gauge on there? i would service that tranny asap also if you have been towing that kinda weight around.
Yes, service the rear end. Remember the friction modifier if it is a limited slip. Drop the transmission pan and pull the filter and be sure the little gasket comes out with the old filter and drain the TC at the same time. You will need about 16 qts. to refill. You are on the right track with engine controls, they make a HUGE difference in shift points. Again, have you pulled the codes?
Pulled the speed sensor tonight and found "some" metal shavings on it. Pulled the diff cover and drained it. Oil was not burned, but spider gears are worn, especially on the passenger side. Looks like hard impact on each gear tooth. I guess thats what I get for stomping on it with the supercharger!
The trans has only about 4K miles on it. I was going to change the fluid at 5K, but I will do it now. I will pull the codes in the morning.
Yup!
It was a special order option on 95-96 F-150 Lightnings. Powerdyne BD11. Puts out about 5-6psi boost at 4Krpm. Hmmm. Come to think of it, the shifting problems crept up when I tool the supercharger off to replace the AC compressor, and I was going to leave it off to see how the mileage would change. Maybe I should reset the ECM so it can relearn without the boost there?
The ECM is stock. I just threw the SC on to see what would happen in terms of power and driveability. Left it on for almost 4 years now. Stated with the Paxton, putting out 6-7 lbs of boost, then went to the powerdyne when I found a stock set up for the lightning. Runs pretty well.
The shifting problem seems to have gone away after cleaning the speed sensor, and servicing the rear. Guess that sensor didnt cross my mind because it was replaced less than a year ago, I figured it couldnt be the problem. When will I learn?
I am planning on a full Mass air conversion. I have a setup from a 96 that was being parted out. I just have to take the time to install it all. Basically anything to do with the wiring and EGR / Emissions cam off the 96 to put on my 95. The only thing that is significantly different is the 95 does not have a knock sensor. Can I just leave it unplugged?
