Well, calling the Customer Solutions Center seems to have worked. The service "Director" just called kissing my hind end and making arrangements to work together to replicate the problem. I'll have to tow my trailer to them and go for a spin but that's ok with me. Whatever it takes to fix it. Thanks again for all the responses. I'll keep ya posted
On the advice of my mechanic, I took my truck to Galpin Ford this morning. What a difference. I explained the problem and he immediately addressed to possiblilty of a bad oil cooler. I spoke to him about Simi Ford's plan to have ME tow in my 5th whell and basicall "prove" to them there was a problem. The service writer at Galpin stated that they would isolate and repair the problem with inconveniencing me. I'm not doing a victory dance yet, but there seems to be a whole different attitude at Galpin. Wish me luck.
how to best dupliacte the concern......
heres what we do. put the truck in 2nd or 3rd depening on the weight and drive it at wot for 5-7 miles.
There us a tool we hook up called a PVT that goes in-line with the cooling system and measure max cooling system pressure. if it passes 16 psi then fail head gaskets if eot/ect is less then 15 degrees and egr cooler passes pressure and vacuum testing.
In the event that eot is greater then the 15 degrees allowed the oil cooler is replaced. If the egr cooler fails the oil cooler is rebuild. if the oil cooler fails and the egr cooler does not only the oil cooler is rebuilt.
just a stupid little question do ever hear a squeel or hum noise going down the road and cant figure out what it is? If you do then replace the serp belt.
there a way to test it as well if you have a scan tool with active commands.
pick pids... fanvar#, fanss, and rpm. with fanvar# at 100% hold the gas pedal down and moniter the differance between fanss and rpm. fanss should be and stay greater then rpm at 100% fanvar.
Cheezit, Thanks for the info. Hopefully, the dealer will be able to find and fix the problem. If they don't I'll certainly be armed with the right questions to ask.
If and when you get your new oil cooler make sure to install a coolant filter or you may be doing this all over again down the road. In fact install one wether you get the cooler or not.
Most of us that tow a heavy trailer with the 6.0 knows there 's going to be a problem going up a respectable grade. My truck acts differently than the others in this tread in that; if I hit a long grade at 70 or 75 in 5th gear and can keep my RPM down around (2100 RPM) I don't have any problems. But, if I have to slow down due to traffic and shift to a lower gear is when my truck over heats. If my RPM goes up around 3000 my exhaust temp drops down but my engine temp will go up to 220 deg. F but what worries me more is my engine oil temp will go up to 234 deg. F.. The problem appears to be related to higher PRMs, friction maybe... Fortunately, none of the grades in the smoky's are long enough to cook the motor. These are the worse temps I've seen on my truck.
btw, I tow a 13k 5er with a 3.7 axle and the 5 speed auto trans...
Well, I'm not doing a touchdown dance yet, but I brought my truck to Galpin Ford on Monday. Tuesday afternoon, I get a call from the service dept asdvising me that they diagnosed the problem as a clogged Oil Cooler. Told me that it would take a couple of days to fix. I asked them to go ahead and do the tranny flush and fuel filters while it was in there and everything was done by Friday. I won't know if it's really fixed until I tow again but what a stark contrast in service.
Simi Ford - 2 weeks to tell me nothing was wrong. They even had an "engineer" check it.
Galpin Ford - 1 day to diagnose and 4 days to fix including other routine service.
To all, Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Just ordered the Coolant filter too!!
Well, It looks like Galpin nailed it. Took the 5th wheel out this past weekend up and down several hills and the temp gauge never budged. Still waiting that coolant filter to finish off the job. By the way, I'm not affiliated with Galpin Ford in any way. Just giving credit where credit is due. I also sent an email to the service director at Simi Ford to perhaps educate his mechanics and so-called "engineer"
when I lived in ca Simi vally ford was a hole then too. I will also say Galpin has had its up and downs over the years. They have a load of tech and service personel though so they tend to chew up work a little faster.
