Remote Starter
Hi, I have a 03 Ex,7-3 Diesel. I believe the remote starter is factory installed. Anyway when I try to use the remote to start the truck, the engine is turning over and it is trying to start but it doesn't. Any ideas? Thanks Steve

Thanks for the reply. Yep, it starts fine and it attempts to start it 4 times when I use the remote. I am wondering if it is some sort of electrical issue. Before I take it in somewhere i thought I would ask some questions here.

whats ur remote started keypad look like... is it a ford one? is it a single button many buttons?

If it's the stock Ford Gold.... (which I have)
before I spent any money repairing it,
I would first look into getting a new remote start from a best buy or something....
Would be money better spent and you'd have a new warranty....
AND, best of all, you could get one with a two way remote that I REALLY miss on mine....
no way to tell if it started if you are not in line of sight of truck or 'hear' it start....

I want a factory remote start... I've called around to aftermarket places and they were all like "wait? For what? never heard of something like that." Not priming your glow plugs can do serious damage though. The other day I was in a crazy hurry and forgot to prime the plugs. It cranked forever it seemed, then started very harshly, and blew a ton of smoke. Never does that any other time, so I feel much better when plugs are primed and ready to go properly. I spoke with dealer, they want $600, so it's not off the table just yet.
for $600 I'll brave the cold and go out and start it...

never have primed my glow plugs
the glow plugs just pre-heat the cylinders.... no fuel priming if that's what u meant...
and on mine, even if I jump in and start it immediately,
it seems to start in no time.... course I am in texus
Would guess 99% of all remote starts nowdays (including mine) can be fitted with a simple timer to energize engine for 15 seconds or so and then activate starter... It doesn't even need to be tied to the wait to start light, just use a timer....
If who you are going to doesn't know that, I'd speak to their Mgr and go to another store !
IN fact, I wouldn't want them even putting fuel in my deezle !
(they'd probably pump in 40 gallons of gasoline )

If the engine's warm, a start without priming the glow plugs isn't bad. But when it's 45F outside and a cold start, it doesn't like that very much, the start sounds very harsh and blows smoke. Then again I'm also bone stock with 185k, so that may have something to do with it.
Yeah, they pre-heat the cylinders, that i'm aware of. Also though, your injectors will move easier, as they're oil driven and a high viscosity of oil can make them tougher.
I'm not surprised no one knows about a timer or anything like that on a remote start around here. It's gas country. There aren't many diesels at all though I somehow moved to diesel alley, where 9 of the 12 houses have diesels. That's nice because every morning the whole street fires up around 6am with some loud ones. Few F250/350's, couple dodges, even a diesel blazer... Aside from that, the 2 stations that sell diesel in this pretty well populated area, I never have to wait in line. Except on one, where a gas guy will pull into the gas pump next to the single diesel pump, when there's 8 other gas pumps open. @$*(# i just want to run over those damned little cars that block me.
