voltage regulator

Can any one tell me if the voltage regulator is built into the alternator or in the computer?

I have a 03 6.0......the other day it died....I had the original batteries in the truck so i replaced them knowing it might be the alternator.......just for preventive maintance......any way the batts still do not show a charge so I was woundering if it was computer controlled....any help we be great thnx

If I remember right they are commputer controlled, if yours is dual alt. the top alt. is the primary alt.140 amp. bottom 120 amp. Single alt. are 115 amp.

Single alt. systems have the regulator built in to the alt. On dual system the pcm brings the 2nd alt. into play if the 1st can't keep up. The 1st one still has the built in reg.

any idea if you have to energize the regulator when you put a new alternator on

You have a hot battery lead to the alt. if that is what you are referring to. These are not like the old generators where you had to flash the field.
