Fan

Hi all,
So this is kind of a dumb question, but when you first start your truck, does the fan spin? I'm wondering if my fan clutch is shot, because it seems like whenever the engine is spinning, the fan is.
Thanks,

A viscous coupling fan clutch will always be spinning, it can never completely disengage.

If the truck isn't overheating, and the fan can be turned by hand when the engine is off, and there isn't any fluid leaking around the clutch shaft, chances are that it's fine.

yes your fan will always spin. it has to to keep your motor cooled. it however doesn't spin at the same speed as your engine is turning. that is where the fan clutch comes into play. with your motor off you should be able to turn the fan with your hand. it might be kinda hard turning but you till should be able to move it. that tightness is what makes the fan turn when the engine is turning but because it still is "slipping" then it wont be the same as the engine RPM. when the fan clutch engages then the fan locks up solid and turns the same RPM as the motor.

basically if you can turn the fan with your hand the fan clutch is fine.
if the fan is stuck and you can't get it to move then the fan clutch is shot.

also if your motor overheats and you don't hear the fan kick in then your fan clutch probably is shot also.

Ok, I can move it with my hand, so I'm fine. Thanks!
