Ok, I have an '06 5.4l f-150 with right at 70k miles on it. probably 5-7500 miles ago i had both catalytic converters changed under warranty because they were plugged. truck ran fine for a but i could then notice that the cats were popping (sill are today every now and then). Well when i accelerate to get on the interstate my truck loses all power at 3200rpm and just stumbles. I normally get a p0307 code (cylinder 7 misfire) well i was told to check a ton of things and ended up changing the coil no injector to no success. what would y'all say the problem could be? I'm thinking its time to go ahead and change the plugs before i get to to high of milage. and was thinking that it ould be fouled plugs since the cats. were bad. I was thinking that the plugged cats could have fouled them out...
I just on't understand i work on diesels all the time at work, but this thing has me stumped.
I have an 08 with the 5.4 and it started hesitating and i thought it was a coil. The dealer agreed and they changed it out (#8). Solved the problem for a while and then it started again so they changed the wiring harness for that cylinder and i have not had a problem since and I have put at least 15 to 20000 km's on it since.
Be carefull on the plugs... they are the 2 peice design. Look up and folow proceedure.
I also would like to add, Cats dont die, they are murdered. In other words, there was somthing else wrong when they replaced your cats...
I have an 06 250 with the same engine. It is a great engine to me. I had the Motor SPort guy tune it at the dealer... It is a power house. Anyways, you might try that, I know it get pricey, but so does the crap shoot.
well through the crap shoot i've only spent $200 and thats new plugs, coils, and one new injector, and 2 new cats. and i agree that there was something wrong to make the cats go out... the dealer just won't fess up to it. So, i'm trying to eliminate possibilities as to what it is, then hopeully they will be able to help out
Well, got her fixed... seems like when the cats went out they fouled my plugs... changed them (only one broke) and had the tool handy so everything went smoothly... I would not be affraid to change plugs on our motors, and i'd tell people the same... jsut plan to spend half a day or two on it and have the tool for the just in case factor and shouldnt be a problem... I went back with motorcraft plugs, and used the special antisieze on them, hopefully i'll be good to go for another 70k miles

I just love hearing about successful plug stories: When I did mine it took me, from the time I pulled the truck into the barn till the time I closed the hood 8 hours... That included 2 football games, dinner and a couple of brewskie's.
Hi All,
I am having the same problem with my 06 Ford Screw, startes fine, on soft acceleration it is fine, when I go to pass another vehicle it spits and sputters and the the CEL flashes, when I ease up on the gas and kinda let it maintain the speed the light will stop flashing. I have recently had the cat replaced and yes it worked for awhile but now it is back. I think it is not the cats but something else. (Ford told me unburnt fuel was leaking into the cats.), I get an error code R0301 or P0301, I also replaced the coil and plug on the number 1 cylinder before the cat.
Did the tune up correct your problem, or did changing the wiring harness solve the problem. I am at the end of my rope with this problem. Any help with this problem will greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.
LOFD: The plug changed fixed my problem completly. I had the cats changed under emissions warrenty (80,000 miles gov mandated) and evedenty the plugged cats fouled out my sparkplugs. Now my sparkplugs didn't look horrible but changing them made me get that smile on my face i never had when i bought it.
I would suggest changing all the plugs, but if moneys tight atleast the ones on the side that the cat was changed on.
Hi well I just went to the garage to have a tune up on my truck (changing) the plugs fuel filter.
I went in and they quoted me the price which I was fine with, but then 6 hours later they came to me and told me that it is my dime for removal of the plugs if they break?????
So they had 2 out and broke 2 $150.00 to remove 2 plugs not to mention the $310 for the tune up. I love my truck but I am getting tired of the hidden charges.
Needless to say I told them to stop and once they got the 2 broken ones out to replace 4 and then back my truck out of there garage.
Does anyone know how to remove these plugs or have tips or tricks, I cannot see me paying $560.00 to have the plugs removed and then $310 to have them put in new ones, oh yes they said they will use anti sieze.
I am so frustrated, truck only has 92k on it and they say don't change until 100k.
Help
I am so frustrated, truck only has 92k on it and they say don't change until 100k. Kevin.
Your in good company here Kevin: I did a few months of research on this issue before I decided to do my own plug change. I have stated before that from start to finish the clock tick by about 8 hours but I did take my time and followed the TSB's that I had read. I believe the latest TSB advises to use carburetor cleaner and I worked each plug out a quarter turn out, then 1/8 turn in very slowly even stopping work and continued to allow the soak as I was determined that I was not going to pay for someone to break a plug off in the head when I could do it myself for free. If I would have broke a plug I would have dealt with it then, possibly picking up the tool to remove the plug or towing it to a dealer. Even now I am not sure what I would have done.
I am not mechanic, just a back yard wrench and I did it...
I have always found that car dealers always charge more for their work and have found local garages tend to do more in the way of guaranteeing their work... Look around if your dealer doesn't want to keep your business and treat you fairly.
I talked to the dealer this morning and I don't know if I shamed them or not but when they called me this morning they said that they got the other 4 plugs out without breaking them, they soaked them all night (maybe they should have done that from the start) but they asked me if I wanted to continue with the tune up hell it only cost me an extra $100, i first called around to see if anybody could do it cheaper but found nobody, so I called back and told them to complete the tune up. Got my Truck back about 4 hours later, running great so far knock on wood. I took it for a drive and it is not bogging done or spitting and sputtering, like before.
I hope this fixes my problems, finger crossed.
Thanks everyone
Hi evreyone,
Well I got my truck back and it worked great, the dealer had do something else unrelated to the tune up, but the tech ended up spilling something in the engine so he wash the engine compartment, now my RPM's are irregular and it is running a little rough. I not happy, is this something I need to take back to the dealer or will it go away?
I think a lot of the cat problems we experience with the 5.4 3v triton is related to the sucky fuel injectors that leak gas into cylinder and ultimately detroy the cats with the raw fuel. I've got 74k on mine but I don't trust this engine very much due to the design flaws, ie. plugs, fuel injectors, and cam phasers. I will probably dump it before 100k for something else......
