$1,750 Parts Budget

I have been trying to sell my gandfather on letting me build a custom $25k truck out of my 1994 F150. As a test he gave me $2k to cover upgrading/repairing the truck and camper trailer. If his mechanics like my work then I get the $25k to do what I really want. The trailer is going to cost me about $250 in parts, so that leaves me $1,750 to spend on the truck.

The truck needs:
water pump
radiator
distributor cap & rotor
spark plug wires
transmission filter
fuel filter - I already have this, just not installed
trailer brake controller

I plan to upgrades as much as possible while I am at it. So far I have found:
electric water pump
upgraded radiator
electric radiator fans
radiator cap
upper & lower hoses
upgraded front rotors & pads
for $1,300 at Summit Racing.

I am budgeting about $150 for the trailer brake controller, so I have about $300 left to get the rest done, and cover fluids.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

for $300 you could get some exhaust or a cam and make it sound pretty nasty or maybe use the stock exhaust and run straight pipes or glasspacks and cam it, just get the biggest cam you can and some springs and lifters to match to make it sound badass if your gona get 25k later you can change it later if your not happy with the performance of the truck

The tires are brand new. Nothing but the body, bed, and interior will be used on the re-build. I have been looking at dumping the electric water pump for a standard re-built unit. I am also checking other suppliers to save $. By the end of the day I should have a good plan together. Tomorrow I start ordering parts.

By finding another dual electric fan kit and going with a regular re-manufactured water pump I was able to save some good money.

If it were between electric fans and an electric water pump which would you choose? Would a K&N intake be better than both?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Your wasting $47 on those plugs..

Motorcraft platinums would be better.

Ford racing plug wires are $41 from summit. Good wires. Ive bought 3 sets.

Really? I have always wanted to try the E3 plugs. Does indexing the plugs help with the Motorcraft Platinums?

Thanks for the tip on the wires!

Some would say platinums are a waste too. Basic coppers have done plenty good around here. If i had to choose between the water pump and e-fans, it'd be the e-fans. I agree on going with the Ford racing wires, better choice and fit.

I also noticed the fram oil filter on your list, don't buy it. Get a Motorcraft filter for the same price with much better quality.

And if you were thinking it, stay away from the so called cold air intakes. Just stick with the drop in filters for your stock airbox.

I get the point in going with copper for the plugs, but for not too much more I can get a longer expected life with Platinum. If I didn't go for the E3s I would have probably gone with Bosch Platinum +4 because that is what I use in my cars. I wish I could do both the e-fan and e water pump, but I gotta choose.

I just listed that oil filter because it was quick and easy to find on the site. If Motorcraft is good I would rather use that.

I am interested in an intake, but I don't think it would help that much with the high underhood temperatures. At least the OEM intake draws from outside the engine compartment. I might get the K&N drop in filter. The last time I towed over 6k lbs in the rain my hood was steaming.

go to the junkyard and get a set of electric fans out of a car. It's a lot cheaper that way and works just as well.My friend has a 78 bronco with a built 460 and runs electric fans out of a 91 lumina and runs cool all day.I wouldn't even waste my time with any platnium plug,i run the good ole autolite copper and have had this last set in my truck somewhere north of 3 years and they still look fine, but i guess if you wanna spend the extra cash 2hp might be worth it to you.How big is the camper you plan on hauling anyways?because if you have a half ton i think gears would be a great investment,i mean you don't wanna have your rig be all show and no go.Trust 3.55 gears with a 302 hauling a camper will be a pig and hard on your tranny,so changing out gears to 4.10 would be a good option that is if you haven't already and that might take away the need for a expensive radiator.Example truck has lower gears, tranny doesn't work as hard in turn the stock radiator and tranny cooler should be fine and you can save your $$$ for down the road for when you get the big payoff

It is worth $160 for me to have a full fan kit instead of putting the pieces together myself. The trailer is just north of 3k lbs . Most of this is not needed for my regular towing. I do tow twice as much some times. The upgraded radiator is mainly because I hate plastic in my radiator. All aluminum all day. I am running 3.55s, but they are fine for the trailer I usually tow. The heavier towing just takes lower speeds and manual shifts of the transmission. I have to improve the truck as much as possible with the cash so that I can get the larger sum to do the work I want done.

My personal opinion for a daily/workhorse driver. Ash can the e-water pump. Bigger radiator: yes. E-fan: Yes. New hoses: yes. Upgraded rotors and pads?? Cross-drilled or slotted rotors are a waste of time. Good quality vented rotors: good. Good quality pads: yes.

I was just about to post an update. I will never go with drilled rotors, but I like the off gassing and pad cleaning effect of slotted rotors. The dimples just happen to be the only option for exactly what I am looking for. I do a lot of mountain driving with this truck.

I would not use the bosch platinum 4s either. My truck had the bosch platinum 2s and I went to motorcraft and it made a huge difference. I wouldn't use any plug with more than 1 ground electrode.

For the E fan go to a junkyard or ebay and get one from a 3.8L Ford car 90-95. They pull alot of air(like 4500cfm) and its a VERY common swap. You should go ahead and get the 130 amp alternator too.

Get a shift kit for the tranny or better yet a Punisher valve body from "
thePUNISHER" on NLOC.

I had already decided multi-electrode plugs were not right for the truck. I just wanted to try the E3s.

Do those 3.8 fans have easy to remove sensors and wiring?

I just put in a reman alternator, so I don't want to change that.

The truck came with a shift kit from the previous owner.
