I need some help with fuel lines...please

Ok...I have a 89 F250 LWB Duel tank. Motor runs great but started having an issue yesterday.
Pulling into my driveway it shutdown...after checking everything but the fuel for an hour finally found that side tank was empty. We put 2 gallons in and it fired right back up.
That lasted about 100 yds and dead again. another 2 gallons and another 100 yds dead yet again and the tank seems like it's empty again.
The rear tank hose has been cut and the rear tank is not in use and the tank switch doesn't seem to work.
Ok the questions...
1) Would the switch valve be diverting fuel to the rear tank thats why I can get but 100 yds?
2) I am taking the bed off and putting manual tank valves in...Can I run the fuel return back into the fuel line itself or do I HAVE to run it into the fuel tanks??
3) Is there a particular type of fuel hose to use that is just for diesel?..would like to replace all hoses.
I would like to just run the fuel return out of the inj pump and injectors right back into the fuel line at the lift pump...but please let me know if this can be done.

Thanks in advance

Obviously, your return line is not running back to the tank you're pulling from. It's either running to another tank, or it's running on the ground. I would say it's very possible you're returning fuel to the rear tank rather than the tank it was pulling from. Also, check under your vehicle under the lift pump. I've seen the seals go out which cause the lift pump to either leak fuel onto the ground or pump it into your crankcase. I'd definitely check the oil level and check to see if it's leaking around the lift pump falling to the ground.

I've never tried to run the return line back into the feed line, and I'm not sure why you'd even want to. I'm not saying it won't work, but I don't think I would try it.

Whenever I replace fuel lines, I just use rubber fuel line. The fuel lines on your vehicle now if they are stock should be some kind of hard plastic until you get up to the lift pump. From there on, they should be metal.

Returning fuel to the tank has a couple advantages.
The return fuel does carry heat away from the IP and injectors, so...

In the winter months, the return fuel will warm the tank some and helps with gelling.

In the summer the fuel returning to the tank keeps the fuel from getting quite as hot.

Unless the ground is dead level the fuel was probably just moving away from the pickup tube.

On the hills around here I have started sucking air with almost a 1/2 tank of fuel.
The front tank is worse about that because of how long it is.

Make sure the tanks are 1/3 full... there has been a problem with the fuel pickup breaking off at 1/4 full and stalling/surging.
