e40d swap
I have a 95 4.9 i6 with the e40d. not knowing much about transmissions when it started acting up i took it to a local shop was told they pulled a tcc code and said the torque converter was shot caused by the fluid pump going out so while they had all this tore down they wanted to put in a shift kit to make it change gears smoother (it shifts pretty rough sometimes), all this is gonna cost me about $2500, which i dont have just laying around. instead of spending all this money on this tranny and because i would rather drive a manual what types of 5-speed trannys would fit into my truck and what kind of vehicles are they found in that i could swap over and just do the job myself maybe for a little less cash??

Many options available to you. But before I would take the word of a tran$mi$$ion shop pull the codes yourself to verify they are on the up-and-up. Just because you are experiencing intermittent hard shifting does not necessarily mean your trans. is in need of a rebuild. Shift kits typically firm up the shifts, not soften them. If you wanted a manual swap, find another mid-90's F-150 or whatever your truck is with a manual trans, take the parts from it, then install in your truck.
