Exclamation Inner Tie Rod help please

The tie rod connecting to the steering box on an 88 F-150 (think theyre all the same?) Cant get it to come out. Doing this in a parking lot. Although there isnt too much room, I have a BFH and hit it, no luck (I put a castle nut on top as to protect the threads no worries) and I used a pickle fork with no luck. I just sprayed the hell out of it with ZEP.

Any ideas from people with more experience?

Thanks!

I dunno. I thought you were supposed to try and break the thing to remove it.

I'm watching this for answers, as I have to replace mine. It's getting worn and the steering isn't loose, but it's getting there.

Why are you separating it at that point, is the tie rod at that point shot or are you changing the gear box? Pitman arm? If the box is good you really shouldn't be repeatedly pounding downward on the pitman arm like that (If I follow what you're doing), the needle bearings around the sector shaft won't take much abuse before you create a problem there.

Use the fork and a large enough hammer with some weight behind it straight on in line with the arm to separate that joint with one or two solid hits. Make sure you have the correct size fork, one that is to small/narrow just won't work.

Because of the type of joint it is, tapered bore, spraying it with any type of penetrate just won't help.

Actually.. what im doing is trying to separate the tie rod from the pitman arm. Im hitting the tie rod and im trying to be really careful with the gear box since it is attached. I dont really want to pull the pitman arm off. Im gonna try and use one of those propane torches to loosen it all up. I know the tie rod has a tapered shaft on it to 'press' it in but i figure something has to help break it loose. Its everything is shot and torn so im just replacing all the tie rods (ends).

I got it. I guess they make something called a "pitman tie rod puller" and I rented one, broke it, thought I wasnt going to get this done. Hit the pitman with a hammer right around where it holds onto the tie-rod and the tie rod just fell.

Thanks for the help!
