I'm sure this question has been asked a million times before but I can't seem to find it. What brand oil and more importantly what weight oil is best to run in my 93? Here in KS winter temps rarely dips into the single digits. Summer time temps can go over 100.
try and find ci-4 or ci-4 plus rated oil not cj-4 basically everything you can find is cj-4 so thats what most end up running.
Alot of people say the rotella burns off kinda fast and I have to agree. I am running mobil delvac 15-40 and you can run a power stroke motorcraft fl1995 filter it will fit and it holds and extra quart and filters better.
Thanks guys. Looks like 15-W40 is the weight of oil to use and brand is kinda up to personal choice. I'm just glad its not like my VW TDI, it takes 5-W40 and only a few brands are approved oil, anything else voids engine warranty and the cheapest that I can find for it that is approved runs over $6 a qt., from the stealership its about $12 a qt. Luckly it only takes 4 qts. to do an oil change.
Would it be ok to use the motorcraft 15w40 diesel oil? Wally world sells it for under $12 for 5 quart jug. A buddy of mine told me he can also get it on occassion for $5 a jug when it comes in to the store he works at (no he is not stealing it lol).
The CI 4, CI 4+ and CJ 4 are more for direct injected motors that have oil pressure fired injectors.
The HPOP pump that runs the injectors have very high pressures, the CI 4 oil has a lot more anti foam addatives so the oil don't foam when the pressure drops as it leaves the injectors.
The recommended rating was CD or CF API rating.
The CI 4 won't hurt anything, but it is not required.
CI 4 rating did not exist when the IDI was made.
Well then for the price I might just give it a try. It is cheaper than rest of the oils and if my buddy can get it that cheap on a regular basis it would be great!!
15W-40 is the oil I always use. I guess the brand is more a matter of choice. Personally, I use Case IH 15W-40. I also use Lucas oil stabilizer in everything diesel I own.

Lucas oil stabilizer is like honey. It hangs up in the engine after shut down which helps eliminate "dry" starts. Does it work? I can't say for sure, but I have seen guys run semi trucks well over a million miles and the bearrings still look great. Locally, Lucas is about the only additive every diesel mechanic swears by. Supposedly, you can double your mileage between oil changes. However, I still change mine in my pickups at 3,000 miles and 10,000 miles on my trucks.
the last oil change i did i used the motorcraft oil and added 2 quarts of the lucas treatment and the truck seemed to like it. So ill probaly stick to using that as motorcraft oil is priced pretty well for a 5qrt jug.
