My speedometer/odometer had worked for awhile and then it had gradually been doing the bounce around thing and then would more than often than not read zero most of the time. Of course the odometer wasn't acting right either. However at odd times when I depressed the clutch pedal in, it would rise and then bounce about again for a bit and when the clutch was released, it was back to zero...???
Of course it would be easy and inexpensive to replace the spedometer cable, but I'm not so sure that's it as it was working, then stopped, and oddly enough would work intermittantly when the clutch was depressed.
Pull the cable off the tranny and twirl the center drive shaft with your fingers and see if it's binding or feels smooth. If that seems ok, take the complete housing out of the side of the tranny that the speedo cable hooked to, and make sure the plastic gear is in good shape.

Did just that early this morning. The gear look ok, but when I started twirling the cable it was anything but smooth. I had ordered a new cable from LMC. My local Autozone sells the cable core only but I'd rather replace the entire cable with a new one.
