Ignition problems from new guy

Hi all , this is my 2nd post (intro post in new members) Hope sum1 can shed some light on my problem
I own an 86 f 100 XLT 4x4 351 auto.

Problem - when i turn key it 'clicks' the solenoid but no start. Weird part is i get no 'charge' light on dash at all. But if i give it 10/20 turns i get the charge light as normal and engine will fire up.

I was thinkin' if it was the starter or solenoid i would get sum dash lights and then the click. but it acts dead except for the click of solenoid. I hope that makes sense? I do get all accesorys .

This problem could be caused by several things. I am thinking a very likely suspect would be your ignition switch. It is fairly cheap and not too hard to change.

It could be a bad solenoid causing it to just click, but that would not explain the other issues with the charge light, etc.

When you first turn the key to the RUN position, does the charge light come on, then go out when you turn it to crank, or does it not come on at all until you turn the key on/off several times?

Hi , charge light dosnt come on at all , i just get the remote solenoid (near battery) click. ..If i sit there and persist with turning the igniton over a LOT of times i get a normal "charge light' and it fires up.

Not disagreeing with f100Jim.. My $0.02

I had a Jeep CJ many years back. 304 V8, which I believe came from Ford. The starter solenoid was Ford. And the solenoid would occasionally "stick" closed - would do nothing when key turned. Can't remember if I got charge light during that condition or not. Temp fix was to tap solenoid lightly with hammer, then it would spark right up like normal. After a few of those, I replaced the solenoid, and all better.

So, could you jump across solenoid terminals as a test? Not sure exactly how to tell you to do it, but the idea is to bypass ignition switch to see if it will start from there.

Ok , heres an update.. I have bypassed solenoid with screwdriver , it will engage starter but dosnt run...Also tapped , hit , kicked ,bashed every part i can thats connected to this.....
to day i pulled the ignition lock from around the column and all checks out ok. If i turn the keyway on the wiring plug it still gives me a click on solenoid. So that eliminates the mechanical parts in column. It all turns the right bits.
so now i move to the plug that goes into the column switch or down to the solenoid itself.
don'tcha' love electrics

yep its a good one . they call them 'bull bars' here in Oz . for obvious reasons , because if you travel in outback australia there is lots of kangaroos and wildlife than can run in front of ya truck or car .

Down Under,
I am stumped. I have seen this excat issue before and it has always been the ignition switch in the vehicles I have repaired, i am speaking of the electrical switch and not the key switch. The charge light not coming on is what tells it is something in the primary ignition system, possibly a bad wire if it is not the switch itself. I wish I could provide more help.
