ok i got a 90 f-250 4x4 7.3 idi 5spd and i was thinking in a year or two of putting a first or second gen cummins in it. how hard are these swaps and would it be better to buy a wrecked or old dodge complete truck to do the swap or would just finding a motor be the better route. any opinions are welcome?
It's always a good idea to find a whole donor truck, but these days, the engines are plentiful and cheap enuf.
It's not all that hard, and if you scour the internet, you'll find quite a few have been done.
On the first generation up to year 93' it takes 1 hot wire to the shut off solenoid. That is all the electrical the engine HAS to have to run.
Usually you can find a whole truck for not much more than the engine price alone. Of course if you get into the computerized engine, getting the whole truck would be the way to go.
