1991 F350 Cummins Swap question

So i am purchasing all of the necessary parts for the swap, i got a good deal on a 91 f350 cc lb 4x4 1k$$ It has a 7.3l in it with an auto tranny. My question is how do i tell whether it is a C6 or an e4od tranny? and which one would be better to use behind the cummins. Im buying a cummins minus the pump for pretty cheap any idea where i can get a used pump and how much it would run me? and also i should be able to run the cummins minus the turbo until i can get a turbo and intercooler for it correct? Also i have the stock motor mounts on the cummins i should be able to use thos to bolt up to the F350's existing motor mounts??

If its got an E4OD it will have an Overdrive Off button on the end of the shifter, no button then its a C6.

If its a C6 you will need some sort of vacuum reference for the trans to shift. the IDI motors had a lil thing on the IP. if its an E4OD you will need some sort of throttle position sensor for the trans. I would use the E4OD as it has overdrive. Cummins don't like to rev, hence the reason 3:55's were stock in a Dodge/Cummins truck and 4:10's were the option.

If the Cummins doesn't have a turbo you will need one before you run it, you could do it but its pointless. as for the intercooler unless you plan on towing alot it to is pointless. save yourself the time and effort and leave the IC out.

I don't know about motor mounts there used to be a place in Montana that made adapter plates and motor mounts.

you can get a stock pump at any diesel shop, plan on spending $700- $1,000 for the pump.

if you have an E4OD you will have an OD off button on the dash to the right of the steering column, and have OD, 2, 1position on the shift indicator, and the oil pan on the trans will have 20 bolts

The C6 will have NO OD off button and ONLY have D, 2,1 on the shift indicator, Oil pan will have 18 bolts

thanks for the info, yeah the only reason to use it without a turbo would be because i would drive it as i build it. i just want to be ablel to get the engine in bolted up running and rolling down the road before i start building up HP. ok so would it be better/easier/cheaper to sell the 7.3l and the auto and get a dodge manual tranny behind the cummins?

You will WANT an intercooler as EVERY cummins in a truck application was intercooled.

As for the trans, it depends if you want an auto or stick?
If auto, you should keep the E4OD and get a controller.
If stick get the GOOD trans and NOT the NV4500

That is not true. Some of the first gen Dodge's with cummins were not intercooled so you do not have to have one. Are they helpful and a great upgrade? Yes.

I loved the NV4500 in the Dodges I had. I never had an issue with it in the '02 I had and I was pushing 566hp. Just do the 5th gear fix and you'll be fine...thats is if you don't do the auto. Everyone that I knew that had the 5600, had nothing but issues. Just my $.02

No matter what trans you have in the truck, I'd use the dodge trans that bolts right up to it.
The adaptor plates and everything to go along with it is way too expensive for my taste. If you have a c6 it will be cheaper, but no overdrive sucks. If you have e4od then you need a controller and that's not cheap either.

I reccomend the dodge trans behind the cummins and save money in the long run.

thanks, i was thinking the same. the 7.3l idi has 100k on the motor, the tranny which is eo4d is 4x4 rebuilt, i can resell those two which should pay for a 4x4 nv4500 whole. and im gettin a used 12v for 400 bux minus the pump and turbo but i can build that slowly. what should i be paying for a used nv4500 with the 4x4 transfercase? 1100 bux for an adapter and tc adapter, 800 for a controller no thanks. i've driven a manual truck my whole life i prefer it.

I'm sorry. You are right. But if you want to make more than 170hp, you will want an I/C. These engines heat up quick if you add any fuel to them
