From what I've read about running jet fuel, it lacks the lubrication properties that regular diesel fuel has and may cause you serious injector problems. I don't know what fuel designation it has: #1, #2, kerosene, etc.

Howdy,

It would be good to have in the tank and complete fuel system if you lived somewhere where it was going to be -40* over night and you were going to leave the truck outside!

Jet-A fuel IS kerosene. (So is #1 diesel for the most part)

You could run it but you probably should mix it with #2 (which is what refiners do when they "winterize" diesel.) You could also mix in a little B100 or other lubrication improver.

I know some people put ATF in their fuel too. I don't know why some think that hydraulic fluid is a good fuel. It contains additives that were NEVER intended to be burned in any combustion chamber.....I would only burn it in my waste oil furnace!

Here''s what the US Army determined using Jet fuel in diesel engines..... The Reality of the Single-Fuel Concept

I wouldn't go to the airport and buy it just to run in my diesel (I do buy it from time to time to use as a solvent in my parts washer)

If I could get it free, I might run in my diesel but I would mix it at least 50/50 (with #2 diesel) and maybe add a lube improver too...

Cheers,

Rick

I run it mine but, I like to add some two-stroke oil for lube. It seems to loose a little fuel mileage on jet fuel, but I only run it when it's free. Also if it's JP4 then it will already have hydraulic fluid in it, but the military is about the only people to use that (JP4 is red in color because of the hyd. fluid). Also if it's very old watch out for bio-contaminant growth.

JP4 is NOT mixed with Hydraulic fluid to use in any jet engine....

AND, JP4 Is not used much by the military anymore. The USAF switched to JP8 several years ago because JP4 is too flammable. JP4 is also called "Wide-cut gasoline" because the the addition of naptha.

It's basically Jet type kerosene mixed with gasoline.

I would not run JP-4 in ANY diesel.......

Rick is right on about JP8. It's a darn good solvent too, so good in fact it'll clean your tank and could plug your filters. JP8 is a fine fuel, but you must ask yourself why is it free ...water? algae?

I stand corrected I WAS thinking of JP8. Sorry to give the wrong name.

As long as you separate any water from the jet A, and either mix it with diesel or a good lube, it should be fine. I've done it off and on for several years now.

how it runs it a 6.0, i dunno (JP8/JP5/JetA), but here are a couple of observations i've made. when we first deployed to mississippi the month after katrina in 05, we took a bunch of hummers and equip with us that had been consistently run on #2. when switched over to JP8, we had a LOT of clogged fuel filters.

then in the desert, i had never really bothered to pay attention to the markings on the fuel trucks UNTIL i started seeing a lot of 6.0 super duties and got to wondering if they ran JP8 or if uncle sam was getting #2 somewhere. probably 85 to 90% of the convoy fuel trucks were marked JP8, a few MOGAS (gasoline), and the last 10% or so were marked DF2, which i presume to be #2. now, if they actually contained #2 or not, i dunno. i'm not in logistics, just a grunt. but there were a few pumps marked "diesel", and i don't think i ever saw the contractors go through the JP8 line that convoy trucks would go through.

from all i've read, sounds like the 50/50 mix idea isn't a bad one, just carry an extra set of fuel filters until you find out just how it'll run for you.

It should NOT be RED if it comes out of a fuel truck unless they're dumping in red dye (or other contaminent like RED hydraulic fluid...to indicate that it's UN-taxed......) They also might be required to dye AV-jet fuel that is prohibited for AV-use so it cannot be used in an over-the-road diesel.

Even fuel that is "de-fueled" from an airplane is considered unusable in an airplane. (I.E. don't let the FAA find out you're putting it back in an airplane...!!)

I don't know how well it would be (straight) in a HEUI injector..... They don't have the same lubrication requirments as a rotory or inline injection pump.

If I was going to run Kerosene (Jet-A/JP5/JP8), I would want to put some 10w non-detergent oil (or other oil like 2-stroke etc) in it to make it a little more "luby"! This is where biodiesel is a really good additive....better than the commercial lube-additives. I still wouldn't put JP4 in anything and It wouldn't even be safe to use as a solvent because it produces a flammable vapor!

Conversely, You can drop a lighted match into an open pail of Jet-A and it will exstinguish the match (like diesel)!

I use it for solvent..........when I get it too dirty to use, I put it in my waste oil furnace
