my 78 with 6" lift and 35x12.50x10 COOPER STT tires
this is my truck with 2 different bodies on it. same 6"lift and same 35" tires. it looked really proportionate with the regular cab on it but got all out of whack with the super cab body. after i put it together i instantly knew it would have looked much better with just 4 inches of lift but if you plan on going bigger on tire size in the future i'd recommend the 6" lift. to sum up my opinion go with the 4" and 35's if you want bigger tires later go with the 6".

Tire opinion
Customcab/Mitch, the Military Goodyear 36X12.50X16.5 are a Bias Ply, so you get flat spots from setting till they warm up and some pretty good road noise and they wear bad.
But they are regrovable (attachment is one that has been regroved) and usually cheap. The MTR (Mud Terrain Radial) is a 37" and wears alot better and is quieter on the road.
(Disclaimer) All this in IMO, and to my best beer fuzzy knowledge. LMAO

Ted, just curious: What pressure do you run in your tires? I took my Goodyear RT/IIs off of my old '77 and put them on my '79 F350. The F350 drove and handled great with a borrowed set of 33" Hankook radial mud terrains, but handles like donkey poop with the 36s on. Slight imperfections in the road surface will literally throw the truck across a lane. I'm running about 25psi in them right now. Maybe I'm too low?

I am about 28. My guess, however, would be worn out components. THe bigger the tire, the more exaggerated the problems will be. My truck has all new suspension and steering components, and it doesn't do any of the stuff you described. I don't even run a steering stabilizer.
Look in to a loose steering box adjustment/tie rods, and suspension bushings. I have new ball joints, poly bushings, and heavy duty tie rod/drag link with Chevy ends.

Might want to add double steering Stabilizer. I want to get one of these for my 79 F350
