Brief Engine Rattle when starting

Hey guys. Got a question. Got a 95 F150. I go to start my truck and for the first 2 seconds it makes a loud rattle noise like there is no oil. The oil pressure gauge reads no pressure for those 2 seconds then at the same time the gouge comes up to normal and the rattling stops. If it's been running and I stop the engine then start it again within the next 10 mins or so it doesnt rattle at startup. Only when its been sitting for some time. It also does it periodically when driving at certain rpms while im shifting gears or on the highway. I check the oil and it reads full unless the dipstick is too long or not the right one for the truck I assume its got enough oil in there. Any suggestion or thoughts. I just bought this as a work truck and need it to last. It's my money maker. Thanks guys.

What weight of oil and what filter are you using?

The factory oil gauge in these trucks is nothing but a glorified idiot light. When the engine makes about 7psi of pressure it'll peg the gauge at halfway and stay there until it drops below the 7psi then peg to low. I'd recommend a real mechanical gauge that you can see in real time what the oil pressure is and get a better idea of what the oil pressure is doing when it's rattling. What oil and filter are being used in the truck? I know using Fram oil filters on these engines can cause noises on startup which is why most people will tell you to run a motorcraft (myself included).

Oh, and what engine does your truck have in it?

Wow! That was fast. I'm not sure what engine or oil filter it has. I changed the oild and filter myself but honestly I just ask for a filter for the truck. Paid no attention to the brand. I can look out there real quick to see what filter. How can I tell what engine? BTW I put about 5 quarts of Oreilys 10W 40 and some Lucas in there.

lol well the first thing to do is find out what engine you have in there, it'll either be an inline 6 engine, or a 5L or 5.8L v8 i would guess at the 300i6 as the engine, being that it rattles ith low oil pressure on startup. go get a motorcraft oil filter, as they have a check valve that stops the oil from bleeding down when you shut the thing off. also that lucas just makes the oil thicker, like runing 15w-40 or 20w-50 plain 10w-40 is fine, depending where you live you might want to run 5/10w-30 during the winter months. main thing is get the glue(lucas) out of there run simple regular oil with a motorcraft filter.
