Too much overdrive?

Under normal driving conditions does anyone find their truck falling into overdrive too much. When i drive around on connector roads with speed limits of about 45-50mph, my ex falls into overdrive (1300-1500rpm) and seems underpowered. I have quite a few mods (see below) for added power. i have a v10 with 3.73 rear. (dont have the money to change the rear right now!) Could there be a mechanical problem i should be looking into?

Sounds normal, with a light foot on the go pedal the transmission will go into overdrive around 40 or 45mph, the only thing you can do is lock out overdrive.

Nope, no problem. It does that to save you fuel.

Thks guys, just seems like the trucks too heavy for it to be in overdrive at lower speeds. I guess its fords way to save every drop of fuel in these beast! does anyone drive around with the overdrive locked out during local driving?

Not without a trailer behind me, no. There's plenty of power even in overdrive.

Even with the back FULL of tools, I just let it go into overdrive.

My Ex goes into OD at 37 MPH. Never a problem here.

in my explorer i allways lock it out except when on the highway.

the excursion i dont lock out unless i'm in a hilly area(around my house) because it will hunt for gears alot. so i lock it out only when in hilly areas because it cant hold constant 50mph on a steep hill in o/d.

i have 3:73s and i think if i had 4:30s i would not have the issues with hunting on hills like i do now. i know switching to 4:10s in my explorer made a huge differance.

also i'll add i have a agressive driving style with alot of WOT..alot..which dont help the hunting *example* as soon as somone turns off infront of me i floor it again to get back up to speed, then have to slow for traffic again, then speed up haha

I know what this guy is talking about and kinda agree. I'm also a V10/3.73 truck but will be re-gearing for my lift soon. Cruising at 40-45 and getting the overdrive and locked converter does seem to almsot lug the motor a lil bit sometimes.

Gears should run around $750-$1000 per axle including parts and labor depending on who does the work and the parts. I would make some phone calls and shop around.

I got mine done on my Durango for $750 (2wd) out the door price.

If I was going to swap a 3.73:1 Excursion, I would go to 4.56:1 gears like I did on my Durango. REALLY made it fun to drive.

Ford have always been know to drop into the highest gear as fast as possible. This also occured with our HO 1969 302 Cougar, Boss 302 Mustang and our Ford LTD Pursuit. You can always shorten the linkage to allow the tranny to switch faster (if it's still mechanical). If not, just live with it. The motors always seem to have enough power.

Just turn off the OD if it bothers you. I do it when I make short trips in the winter.
