I have a 1985 Ford F150 4x4 I picked up to start a handyman company after being laid off this summer. Everything was fine up to about 1 week ago. The truck has a 351 with a 4bbl. Auot trany. I believe it has a duraspsrk ignition becuase the ICM is mounted on the inner fenderwell not the distributor.
The truck wont start. I have fuel but no spark. I have read thru a lot of past posts but I cant find the answers I need.
I have replaced the following parts-
ICM including the pigtails, the old ones had jumpers and exspoed wires.
the distrubutor, including the stator and the relector
the coil and i even bought a new coil connector as the old one had bent crimp ons hold them to the coil.
the coil wire
distributor cap
rotor
I have checked voltage at the ICM and I have 12 v
at the coil I have 12v- thats to high-
I when tested with a light i get a steady light on the TACH side of the coil it dims when I try to start the truck but its hard to tell if its flashing.
I have tried a lot of things from other posts with no sucess.
well have replaced the spark plug wires and the coil wire and the cap, rotor and the entire distributor.
Still no spark
the store says the ICM is good and I just replaced the ignition switch as well.
Still no spark.
I have checked the ground from the distributor and the engine to the frame and its good. I have checked the voltage at various points and I have a question,
I get 12v at both sides of the coil with the key in run. Is this correct? seems to me they should be different.
12v on both sides is right. You said the test light dims on coil neg while cranking, make sure it stays brighter on the pos side than neg, that would indicate that you are getting a pulse4 to the coil and it should spark if the coil is good. Its going to dim some due to bat voltage drop but it should be a little dimmer on the neg side
Is there a ground coming out of the ICM? the black wire goes into the distributor and its has a good ground at the screw, but I tested the black wire at the ICM with a pin thru it and I dont have a ground. The ICM is bolted to the plastic inner fender so I'm not sure how its grounded.
My '84 did the same thing recently..Same engine/trans. It drove me nuts. Finally took it to a shop. Turns out..BAD GROUND somewhere ..My mechanic ran a new ground ..Problem solved..
I used a Ohm meter to test it. I had ground at the distributor base but when I pulled back some insulation and tested the black wire at the ICM, no ground. I checked the black wire all the way from the connector at the distributor and found no issues. I will try replacing the wire todau and if needed ground it directly to the battery.
