Has anybody modified their firewall to run a 4" superduty downpipe? If so do you have any pictures of what section was modded and how much?
I'm converting the '95 over to a SD turbo setup and will be running the 4" downpipe. Looking for pictures and guidience as to where to cut and how much to clearance. Will be doing it sometime this fall.
No need to talk me out of doing it cause it isn't needed and the 3" will be fine. I'll be running a larger turbo in the future and that's why I want the 4" dp now.
Just look at the section where the stock pipe runs, find the seam on the firewall, take all your carpet out and cut the floor at that spot and weld in a channel for it to run along that line...
I have my cab hammered in a LOT, AND have a 3" body lift and a 4" pipe still needs to be dimpled in at the cab.
ONLY way to make it work is to cut the floor out and weld in a piece of 5" pipe cut in half to make the hump.
But I will say it's not needed. Plenty of guys making 550 hp on a 3" downpipe...
Thanks guys. I'd still like to see some pic from anybody that has done it. I picked up a SD firewall heatshield the other day. So maybe I can use that as reference.
I'll also add that I tried to use a 4" SD down pipe when I mounted my 38R turbo. There was no way on God's green earth that the pipe was going to make the bend out of the turbo and go down the firewall, even with the 3" body lift and beat-in firewall. There's no way to get the 'cobra's head' of a 4" pipe to fit...
On my custom mounted turbos, I have the trubo mounted way to the driver's side and allows for more room for the turbo flange and elbow, but with the stock turbo, I don't see it happening. I would have made it fit if I thought it was possible even for my truck.
not to sound like a traitor... but there were a few guys over at psn who have done this. but it was with an h2e. they describe it as cutting where the new dp would be and tunneling sheet metal and pop riveting it in there. not my cup of tea. my used h2e kit came with a 4" dp and i refuse to do that. Im still waiting on hypermax to call me with prices

I need to do this. My custom downpipe is hitting the wall. I've been toying around the idea of cutting out the floor board but my problem is right at the end of the valve cover were it turns to go down.

there's a lot of pounding, cutting, and reshaping of the firewall
Thanks for the pics Matt. IT looks like you've taken out more than the other pics I can find. I was looking at it alot closer last night when I put the 3" dp in. There's quite a bit that has to be removed. No worries though. I'm going to have the dash and motor out of the way so I can go at it.
