Battery idiot light came on, truck ran 60 miles with it, thought I would need to replace battery. Died on side of road, put new battery in, idiot light still on. Assume that the alternator is the problem?? Can I replace, and if so, how hard? 2001 F150 Supercrew, 5.4 Triton. Hoping for step by step instructions, even pictures if possible. (I'm somewhat mechanical)
Looks like I may have to take off air cleaner and accessories, but beyond that, looks like two bolts, take tension off of the belt and presto.
You have it dead on, except for there is no reason to remove the air cleaner, unless it's just in your way. Remove the battery terminals before you do anything!! Also make sure you get your alternator from a reputable place...no Autozone!!

Go to your choice of auto parts store and pick up a Chilton guide for your truck I got mine at O'reillys for $26 it will be a good guide for what you're doing.

You're exactly right the hardest part (besides paying for new alt.) is getting the belt off.
dont take off the air filter, take off the 3 screws holding the plastic box over the throttle body. then loosen the two hose clamps and take off the plastic intake tube from the air filter to the throttle body. now your looking right at the alternator. use a 1/2 inch breaker bar set into thte square hole in the spring tensioner pulley arm and loosen belt and jump it off. now just take wires off alternator, and two mounting bolts on bottom front and little bracket on the top.
Another sugestion, if you can do without your truck for a day or two have your alternator rebuit instead of replacing it. when i did mine i think it was around $40 instead of 2-300 youll pay for a good new alternator
