Needs some opinions. My son's 86 F150, is acting up. When cold, the motor turns over fine. Once it runs for a while, and you shut it off, it cranks very slow, sometimes hardly at all (positive cable heats up quick, and it's a heavy duty 1/0 cable). The battery is brand new, the alternator is brand new (both 2 days old), but it still won't spin when warm. It has a cheap rebuilt starter in it (Advanced Auto Parts), could that be the problem (windings heating up)?. We've tried retarding the timing, but that doesn't seem to help.
Thanks
Have you checked the grounds? Start with the ground cable. While you are at it, also check the positive for resistance. Grounds will cause a lot of electrical problems, Na when things warm up, they can get amplified.
The DS-II system has a white wire that retards the spark when cranking.
Looking at your sig I would say the headers are overheating the starter or its wiring.
Some heat shielding or a smaller high torque starter are in order IMHO.
I have shorty headers on the truck. I do not have the DS-II ignition, as this truck was fuel injected. It currently has an aftermarket GM style HEI distributor. I don't think the dizzy or the headers are the real problem, because they've been on the truck for 4 years, and the problem just started recently. I'll replace the ground wire to the block, and if that doesn't do it, I'll pull the starter out of my 89 Mustang, and see if the problem goes away?
Thanks
Sorry, I thought the 351 was still carbed in '86.
Must have been only the over 8600 GVW trucks.
If it were the ground, that's the wire that should get hot because of resistance.
How old is the starter?
Sorry, I didn't mention that this truck was originally a 302 EFI, but I swapped in a carb'd 351W. The starter is only 2 - 3 months old, I replaced it because the old starter crapped out completely. It worked OK up until 2 weeks ago.
Sorry for the late reply, lightning blew out the cable yesterday...
You have a Hi-po motor, how much compression and where is your timing set at now?
Does your HEI ignition system have start retard???
I would still recommend something like a Tilton starter and a heat shield.
With the time and money you have invested in your engine it just doesn't make sense to have to go through this $#!* every couple of months.
Compression ratio is 9.5:1, and the origiginal starter I had in it lasted 3 years (it's in a 4wd, and it does see quite a bit of mud and water). My Son just swapped in the starter from my 89 Mustang, and it seems to be working fine now?. I don't think Advance Auto Parts will take the starter back and refund my money, just because they will test it cold, and it will work fine. Seems there's a quality issue here with their rebuilt units?. They probably skimp on the windings and brushes?
Even the starters coming in brand new Fords are rebuilds.
As for AA or AZ, I'd imagine they're buying the lowest cost ones available, but have no real information.
If the cable and starter are getting hot and you don't want to fabricate a shield have you considered wrapping your headers with some of that foil/ceramic stuff? (I know, mud and water..)

Take it in anyway. Stand your ground if they give you any flack. I doubt they will, since it will take them 5 seconds to get another off the shelf and hand it to you. Now if you bring the next one back right away, then they might say something, though I bet they are used to people bringing their stuff back all the time.
