My truck shifts like a new truck when it's cold, but if you've been driving for a while, or are in high stress stop and go it lags when shifting and sometimes it shifts pretty hard.
My question is, do you think this could be something as simple as thin fluid? It only has about 25k miles on a rebuild and even though I serviced the transmission early about 8k miles ago or so, I didn't change it out several times over a period of time to get the fluid thoroughly flushed out of the torque converter.
Sounds like a winner to me! If it still shifts hard when hot after I do this what could it be? I probably shouldn't ask but I don't like stumbling upon a worse case scenario without a forewarning.
Add a bottle of Lucas transmission fix. I have been battling this problem on my 93 flareside and finally appear to have it fixed. I changed all of the fluid with Mercon V, added the Lucas, and added an aftermarket transmission cooler.
If you are seeing the problem mostly after it's warm, it may be getting too warm.

This is very true, but after a good fluid flush and an after market cooler is there really anything else you can do to keep it cool? There shouldn't be anything you have to do to keep it cool as it's a quality design.
The cooler was the last step for me. Since then the tranny has been doing well. The Mercon V is a much better fluid because it has an anti-shudder additive in it. The Lucas product is absolutely amazing. It completely stopped the slipping in my 1990 AOD and seems to really help all of the older transmissions.
