I have a friend with an 04 screw with a 4.6 that just started stalling on him when coming to a stop or sometimes while idling. He just replaced the battery but I don't think that is related.. the old battery wasn't holding a charge. Had the Ford dealer scan it today and they said there were no codes at all it just flagged idle rpm as too low.. no kidding. So what are the possible causes? Could this be related to a dirty throttlebody? I also noticed there is a rather pronounced lag between throttle application and engine response, don't know if that's normal for these electronic throttles or not. Truck has a drop-in K&N filter too. Thanks.
Could be the throttle body, mass air sensor, I don't think either of those components set off any codes. My 04 5.4 just did the same thing, replaced mass air and she was good to go. Sometimes the oil used on rechargable filters will cause the MAS to malfuction. Before you replace it, clean with MAS cleaner, if you use anything else it may break it completly. Also once the MAS is cleaned and re-installed to the tap test. If you tap on it and the engine stalls or RPM drops its crapped out. You can search MAS taptest on this forum and get more info. Hope this helps alittle.
Update: The owner got a bottle of throttlebody cleaner today and gave it a good soaking. This has eliminated both problems, throttle response is much better, it idles smoothly and doesn't stall anymore when comming to a stop. Overall I'd say problem solved.
