ok 99 expy the the front output on the t case wont disengage. i can hear the shift moter shift from hi to low and back but when i put it in a4wd i dont hear it do any thing.even if i pull the fuse the front output is still locked in.is it possible to pull the shift motor off and try to manualy shift it to the 2wd spot?
so is it possible to take it off and manually shift it to 2wd just to see if the t case is working right?if that works then at least it would eliminate that from the list of stuff that can be wrong.and point to wiring or motor.plus i am going over a pass at the end of next month and i would love to have a4wd.right now i cant have the drive shaft in because it binds to much going around corners.
Well, I have some good news and some bad news. I had this happen on my 99 Expedition. The good news was that the part that was broke was a $18 part, the bad news is that the part is inside the transfer case and the case needs to be dropped to get to. There is a wave washer that is in the case that basicly holds the transfer case in 2wd until slipping is detected and force overcomes the washer and engages 4wd. This washer breaks and the transfer case is in 4wd all the time. I had about 10 hours in the job.

This sounds like a good reason never to use the AWD setting and go straight to 4H.
Problem with that is there is no 2wd selection on the 99. Your choices are AWD, 4HI, 4LOW.

Ohhhh, I see. So then when did Ford switch back to a 2H-4H-4L? I know on the 01 F-150 I occasionally drive, that's what the switch reads. Sounds like the full time AWD was short lived?
I know that in the Expeditions, the 2wd did not make it back until the 2003 model year. I dont think that the F-150 ever had the AWD option. My wife loves the AWD, and it makes me feel better, cuase if she starts spinning in the winter, she doesnt have enough patience to think about turning a dial.
Just to throw this out there, but there is no AWD selection on the 1999 Expedition, it is A4WD, which means it is in 2WD, then when the back tires slip, magentic hubs are locked which turns it into 4WD(might be AWD, I thought it was 4WD). When 4Hi and 4Lo are engaged though, it has mechanically locking hubs.
I am not 100% sure on the info above, but it is what I have picked up over the time I have been here on FTE. Anyone who questions this info, please search for the brown wire mod first.
at the moment i want to know if i can pull the motor off to see if the motor put it in the a4wd spot,or if it is in the 4 hi spot.if it is then i know it is the t case,if not then it is wiring.how can i tell if the rod the motor moves is in the right spot.....
ok so the motor works fine, the t case is in the 2wd spot but the front output is still locked.so i guess in the next few months i will be looking for a bw 4406.i am not looking forward to that.
Yes, you can pull the motor. I am pretty sure that there are even marks on the case to see which selection it is in.
As far as the AWD, A4WD, stuff, it is all the same to me. You did describe the function perfectly.

79schaefer, don't mean to dig up an old thread but do you by chance remember what the part number is for that wave washer is? I've look all over online and can't seem to find one. I'm about 99% sure that's my problem but can't find any information on it.
