Here’s the problem: when I put it in 4X4 auto OR high I don’t get any light. 4X4 low works great. But not high. BUT! I know the front splines engage because you can feel it while turning.
So any thoughts? I might add that the indicator light is NOT burned out (it lights up when the ignition is first turned on)
Also what is the "shift pattern" on the transfer case?
For example: say
2 wheel at 12 noon
auto 4 at 1
4 high at 2
4 low at 3
or
2 wheel at 12
4 low at 11
4 auto at 1
4 high at 2
In short; does the actuator go thru 4 high and 4 auto to get to 4 low or does it shift the opposite direction?
I can't tell you the "shift pattern" on the transfer case, but I can tell you that the dash lights are controlled by switches/sensors down on the shift motor. So either the switches/sensors are not making contact or the wiring to them is damaged.
I was thinking the the contacts in the switch MIGHT be bad, it seems like a LOT of issues I had with this truck have been poor or corroded contact points
Maybe this weekend I'll yank it apart and clean it up....
I am having the same problem with my 2004 Navigator. The 4x4 high light is not coming on. It does feel like the 4x4 is engaging when I turn the switch but I get no light on the dash.
4x4 low works just fine it engages and I get the light on the dash.
I had the same issue with my 98. It would engage into 4 low but had a hard time coming out. Then it would not give an indication when I tried to go to any other selection. I ended up buying a new actuator and the problem was solved. It is an easy fix. Bought the actuator on ebay.

E-Dragon were you able to solve this issue?[/quote]
As of yet, I haven't had much time to be messing around with it. Right now it's not a PITA since I know it does engage the 4X4. But I will fix/look at it soon, other wise it will bug me later on...
Are you sure it's actually going in to 4 high? You can feel it when the IWEs kick in but they are vacuum actuated, I don't think that necessarily means the transfer case has gone in to 4 high.
