Hello
I have a 2001 F250 with a V10 2wd. I am trying to replace the fuel filter but am wondering about how to release the pressure in the line before I try to get the filter off, is there a way I can release the pressure. I have the special tool that slides into the fitting to get it off. (any tips on this tool would help also) I did search the forum but am having trouble finding this info. Thanks very much any help greatly appreciated.
Luke
Let the truck sit for a couple hours and any pressure will go away. All the fuel filters I've changed on various vehicles (same filters) I've never run into any pressure in the lines. The hardest part for me is getting the filter out of the stupid filter holder. Not much fuel runs out of the lines either, the fuel in the filter itself is what spills all over the place. I've tried pulling the fuel pump fuse and running the truck until it dies but thats a waste of time IMO.
if you are in a hurry or just want to be sure, you can release the pressure by depressing the pin on the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Just let it squirt into a rag or something.
dkf is right, that little filter seems to store about 5 gallons of fuel (in reality it is probably about 4-8 oz but seems like more when it is pouring onto your face)... Get a small bucket ready and once you get one side of the filter disconnected just let the filter gravity drain into the bucket before wrestling with the second fitting.
You will probably want to refrain from having a smoke until you get cleaned up.
