Temperature gauge needle location

Last time I pulled my boat I it dawned on me that might truck might be a little hot. I read another post about bad thermostat so I am posting.

My needle under normal and while towing is right near the middle/thermometer symbol. It sits just a hair to the left of this symbol. My tranny meter is about at 1/4.

Anyone remember yours or take notice and post back please.

My water temp is the same as yours and the trans temp a little higher, just a shade left of center.

Senix has it right! These are NOT real gauges!

The "gauge" will show in the normal area no matter what the engine temp is as long as it's within the specified limits. I monitor my temps with a scangauge. Pulling a 15 percent hill at full throttle, my engine temp went from 197 to 220, and the engine fan came on to cool things down, yet my "gauge" on the dashboard never moved a bit.

For real gauges, you'll need to get a device to read actual sensor readings through the OBD-II port. Here are a couple...

ScanGaugeII - Trip Computers + Digital Gauges + Scan Tool

Edge Insight Multi-Gauge Display Monitor

I use the Edge Insight. Water temp moves 20 to 30 degrees with no indication on the factory gauge. My engine coolant fan clutch won't engage until I hit around 225 and still no movement on the factory gauge.

Engine oil temp ranges from 198 to 220 as well.

Exhaust gas temps run from 600 - 1250 or so when towing.

The OBD II monitors are very interesting and if you are curious or concerned you will be much more comfortable using your truck if you get one.

ruschejj--did you have to get the additional thermocoupler connection to get EGT readings? Or did just the Edge Insight with its OBDII connection give you those? I saw a review on one website where the guy siad he had to drill a hole in his exhast manifold gor the thermocoupler--I'm not up for that, but would like to see my EGTs....

I'm not ruschejj, but I think I can answer that for you.

The 6.4L engine has pyrometers in the exhaust system to track these things, as the PCM needs to know EGTs for proper operation of the regen system.

Therefore, the sensors are already there and the Insight can read them from the PCM. No drilling or tapping required!

Senix, I called Banks yesterday and asked about the IQ. Never heard of it until I saw the link you posted in another thread!

As of yesterday they aren't shipping the IQ yet, as they are still finalizing some things with it. As of right now it's only compatible with 6-gun equipped trucks, but in the near future it will function as a standalone system.

The cost is around $1300 for the 6-gun and IQ package, which is a decent deal. Probably not as good of a value as the Spartan Phalanx setup, but I think it's a safer setup from what I've seen...

Your information is correct! Since I have the 6-gun I am thinking of the upgrade.

Crazy1 (AKA Tom) is correct. No drilling or adding another thermocoupler. The Insight and probably others just pick up the signals from the existing sensors.

There are 4 exhaust gas temperature readings on the 6.4 engine. I don't know what they mean but they are labeled:

BIS1
BIS2
BIS3

#3 is the temp inside the DPF filter, #2 is before the filter, I don't know where #1 is.

The 4th reading I get is picked up somewhere (I don't know where) and changes very quickly with throttle position, it's the most active reading. Maybe the exhaust manifold? The others change very slowly and remain very steady during normal operation and rise fairly quickly during a regen cycle.

Now that I think about it, there must be one in the EGR system but I don't know which.

Thanks, guys, for proving why I LOVE this site!

I learn something every time I log onto this place. Never knew how many pyrometers were in the exhaust...

And for the EGR, I'm willing to be there's a sensor either in or near the EGR valve. I think the temperature of the recirculated gas has to be monitored for the system to work properly.

Found it!

Look at the EGR system on the left side of the diagram. Notice the EGRT sensor just before the EGR valve?

Thanks guys for the great responses!! Complete with pictures even! I didn't know the gauges were "fakes." I assumed since they "creep" up after start up, they were real. I guess I'm going to have to ask Santa for an Edge Insight. Oh, wait, I just remembered who Santa really is...dang it.
