My 1999 F350 Superduty was just about to turn 120,000 when both the odometer and trip meter stopped turning. Don't know if replacing the sensor on top of the read diff housing will help. Thanks in advance for your advice.
The same exact thing happened to me at just over 100k miles. It was the VSS located at the top of the rear differential positioned towards the front of the vehicle. I bought one from Ford for $20 and slapped it in. Be super careful with the brittle junk clip on the harness that connects to the sensor. I don't recall the socket size used to remove the hex head bolt. 10mm maybe.
Some folks say to clean the VSS instead. The one I pulled out was filthy, but I figured $20 was worth not having to go under there again and mess with it if it didn't work.
I just picked up one in a 2-bit town in Utah on a recent road trip due to a speedo problem. Turned out to be a different problem and it's still in the box.
I replaced mine about 2 weeks ago. My speedometer, odometer quit and the ABS lite came on. Replaced the sensor on the diff and everything works fine now. Lee
I did some more research on my problem and don't know if this problem is related to the VSS since my speedo is working and no other warning lights (ABS) are coming on. Can the odometer just be stuck since it is trying to turn over from 119999?
Well after taking in all of your guy's input, I went out to the truck and pounded on the dashboard and panel and it worked! Odometer rolled over to 120000 and is tracking just fine. Problem solved with a little bit of persuasion!
