Hi every one, I am working on an 86 Ranger for my youngest son, we are going to install a 3.0 with trans into his truck. I do have some questions about the trans and speedo. The auto donating the parts is an Aerostar (1995) with a T code on the door tag.Can I use the speedo from the star? and how much of the harness will I need?
Do you just have some parts from an Aero, or the whole sha-bang. If you have everything you are going to want to transfer over the computer and wiring harness.
If you don't, then you are going to have to scrounge them up from somewhere else. Don't quote me on this, but I believe the '86 Ranger was carb'd.
As for the speedo, here is where things get a little complicated. The 95 Aero's speedo is run off of a sensor on the transmission to the pcm, then to the instrument cluster. I am sure that the speedo in the '86 is mechanical. I am momentarily stumped on how to correct this issue unless you pull the dash out of a 90's ranger and use that instrument cluster (with the digital odometer.)
Just curious, what was the original engine that was in the Ranger?
carburated rangers V6 had cologne engines, so you need 2.6/2.8/2.9/4.0 tranny ore do bellhousing swap.
'95 aero had A4LD with 2 solenoids ore 4R44E with 4 solenoids. a4Ld for carburated engines has only one TC LockUP solenoid. So to engage OD you need to put switch inside truck ore make small electronic box that engage OD at 45-50 MPH. Look for external tranny computers that work separatly for example http://twistmachine.com/shopping/ind...&products_id=9
You can use electronically controlled tranny with carburated engines.
Yes nighthawk I do have the entire car to pull all of the components, In fact I have two 95 Aerostars. one that a friend gave me and one I owned. mine needs clutches and bands. so I have any thing I need. Oh yes, the ranger was injected it had a 2.8 in it.

Is the engine toast in the Ranger? Or are both the engine and tranny toast?
If it is just the engine, the Aerostar 4.0L will bolt on the 2.8L transmision, which would solve the issue of speedo, and give you more umph!
Yes the trans from the ranger had a sever fluid leak, the trans worked fine in short runs but on long runs it would push out two to three quarts, yes the vent was open. the trans in my Aerostar had bean rebuilt some fifty thousand miles ago but is lagging in shift, so it needs clutches and bands. we have a small wrecking yard but I have never had a 4.0 come in. Oh well I will have to figure some way to make it work.
