wierd electrical gremlins....

seems to me I'm not lucky.... Fortune wants to show me ***.....

Okay! Tried to start my aero. Starts, but then floods itself. And what I realides, when ignition on, but engine off fuel pump is on! and injectors click! like I have PIP pulses.

Engine runs at 2000-3000 RPM only, else stalls.

And that is not all. Starter went out!!!! !!!!! starter drive gear is fully destroed!

Question

Sounds PCM related. Clean all the electrical connections including the battery. Unplug battery for 10 mins and reboot.

today did not start. Got the O-scope and see - no PIP. Tried to purchaise PIP sensor, but dealers offer disributor unit only! well, I got GM hall effect sensor, drilled holes to secure it inside distributor. tried to start, she starts, runs some seconds then stalls. PIP dissapeares again! but... I cut PIP wire and crank engine with starter. PIP dissapeares in 2-3 seconds.

WT@!!!!!

That is starting to sound like a heat related problem.

I think the PIP requires a current to flow through the coil and senses disruptions in the magnetic field from the notch in the damper. I am guessing that the driver in the EEC that supplies this current is failing, lasting only a few seconds. Also, see if there is a short in the wires connecting the PIP sensor to the EEC.

PIP is supplied via TFI. There is only one 200 ohm resistor inside TFI that limits current and one 2K resistor that is connected to PIP out.

May be not genue PIP sensor is not designed for this TFI....

I think the pip signal is sent via induced magnetic field, it requires no power supply. Maybe you have the VR (variable reluctance) version, not hall effect? Check if the magnet has come loose?
Should there be a code for missing PIP? maybe not with OBD1.

EEC-IV works with hall effect sensors only.

Optic sensors are not used, becouse they fail when dirty.

Inductive, like ABS WSS (coil on magnet) sensors as engine position sensors (EPS) are used too, for example DEEC, Cummins, Mercesed diesel... When I have failed Mercedes Diesel cam pos. sensor I use ABS sensors, they are longer and have different connectors, but they fit...

Well, today I got made in Russia EPS for $3 and I try to fit it in Ford distributor... may be she'll start

well, $3 sensor died in 10 minutes becouse current it is designed was too low, then ECM requires (600 ohm additional resistor in TFI and 1K in ECM are to reduce interference), so I added P-channel MOSFET (IRF9640). It is 11A MOSFET, too tought!!! enought to swich headlamps, but I had no other at home. LOL! got new sensor....

now she starts, but SPOUT circuit is cut and I wanna look what was wron tommorow.

well, measure PIP today, about 80 ma, more then my HE sensor was designed... 11A mosfet will newer die.

But I'm still not lucky. she started and I got oil leak, somewhere in rear engine end... I sugest Oil pressure sensor.... I draw her to car lifter, and.... when I tried to start her I realised that starter is bad.... it was hot and did not crank. I tried to crank engine with wrench... not sezed, so started is out!

i've just rebuilt starter.... crancks, fires, but no oil pressure and I have oil leak... seems to me distributor does not rotate pump shaft... well, pulled out distibutor, tried to turn oil pump with 8mm wrench - I have about 1 bar oil pressure... so... I will inspect distributor tommorow
