Axle decode

I have a 78 4x4 f150 axle code H2J. I know the J is for power steering. The H2 is what? Did a search, not easy to find. Also does that tell me the front axle ident also??

Thanks

All of these 78 1/2 ton 4x4 trucks would have had a D44 front axle and a 9 inch rear axle.

H2 = Ford 9" limited slip rear axle, 3.50 ratio.

If it says J, then the front axle is standard. In this case, it'd be a Dana 44 with the matching ratio.

J refers to P/S on 1973/79 F100/350 2WD/4WD's & 1977/78 Bronco's.

It has nothing to do with what the ratio is of the front driving axle on 4WD's.

Most 1973/79 (1967/2009) F Series 4WD's do not have the front driving axle ratio listed with the AXLE code.

There are a few exceptions:

P = 1973/75 Dana 44-6CF 4.55-1 with P/S.

Q = 1973/76 Dana 44 4.55-1 with P/S.

What spline count would a 72 4x4 have with the H2 axle code? My rear end is having problems and I’m going to need to replace. Sounds like it’s a 9” 3.50 based on the previous info. Would that be correct and how can I determine the spline count?

Thanks

the best way to know is pull an axle and confirm.
Is there a metal tag bolted on the front of the diff?
H2 might decode to something different in 1972...In my experience, the hood over the pinion shaft indication that rear came from a car...and the case looks like it might be a 9 3/8" diff...

you have a 9-3/8 rear center section -- so it has been swapped into your truck --- they were usually used in mid 60's to early 70's cars such as T-birds , Lincolns with 2.80 , 3.00 or 3.25 gear ratios --- the only parts available for them new would be bearings and pinion seal -- NO gears or carrier parts except for used stuff ,, you possibly have minimum axle spline engagement as well --- find a regular 9 inch case center section --- pull it as 9-3/8 diffs with 3.50 gears would be extremely rare or not exist at all.
