8.8 how tuff is it

I dont know where you are at, but I have a set of motive gears, I would sell cheap... They have 3 passes on them, 4:10 ratio. I was going threw the traps at 7000 rpms, I needed to be more toward 7500. I even tried to run it as a 2 speed LOL going threw around 8500, as I was playing with my intake runner sizes. I settled with 4:56, but would like a set of 4:88 to try.

Stay away from Richmond gears... Go with a good set, Like Ford Motor SPort, or I like Motive, there are a few others to Yukon I think.

T-birds, starting in 89 were all independent rear suspension, so without a special framework, you wont be using those center sections in your early mustang. I believe the gears and ring gear carrier are the same except that the side gears (28 spline) have a slight bevel cut into them for the circlip on the axle stubs to snap into the side gear. You are correct, 31 spline axles will not fit into a 28 spline side gear, thats not what I was implying. I think the side gears may be purchased separately and will fit where a 28 side gear was previously, used to be available anyway--. For that matter, you might be able to swap the ring gear carrier from the explorer into the mustang housing and get your 31 spline side gears (needless to say, you will have to have the correct axle)

I have not compared the bearing # on a C clip eliminator to the bearing # of a 9" carrier, but I really suspect they are about the same, both have to be pressed onto the axle. I have put the eliminators onto a 90 GT. The 9" weld on end fitting for the housing would (my .02) be stronger that the C clip eliminator, but the C clip elim. may be plenty strong---I dont know about that.

We have put well over 2000 HP threw rear ends, that run c-clip eliminators. It is the same as the 9 inch setup... The bearing ect are not the reason for the c-cllip eliminator. The reason is, if you snap and axle, at half track at 200 mph, the axle doesnt fly out. The engine unloads, and hits the limiter, and shut down, if set up right.

I guess that is my point, or maybe we are saying the same thing, C-Clip eliminators, and the 9 inch out bearing set up. Are the same. It just minimizes catastrophic failures. As you stated, they are pressed on the axle shafts, to hold it together.

Yep, they keep the axle from passing the front end . I have wanted to compare the bearing to one from the 9 setup, I would think the 9 style welded ends would be a little stronger, but from what you say, dosnt appear necessary.

Has there been any change of opinion about using the C clips on Bronco rear ends? I know that a tapered bearing has been available for a while. I sure would like to do something different than the present 8.8 setup even better than the offset bearings. I checked the 9 ends, price is close to re-do of 8.8 brgs, except they want the axle out.

IMHO these guys are absolute experts in every since of the word. They race, build, repair and sell parts for any diff.- and custom mod anything you need- literally. Their advise is always free and forthcoming, their service is excellent and their prices very resonable IMHO. Many pro racers in SoCal use them (dirt, asphault, drag, circle track, etc.)

For the money an 8.8 rear from say 95 to 2005+ explorer/mountainers etc with the 31 spline axles with posi/disc brakes/an a total width dimension of 59 1/2 is a really economical set-up. And with the few dollars that one may want to spent in addition for girdle,posi change etc. it still looks like a strong rear for most any muscle car in the hp I mentioned as well as others have chimed in on with there hi hp rides.

I think it is a very economical alternative to the 9 inch, with out sacrificing strength. I think the only time I would start thinking 9 inch, is once you go over 1000 hp, and then htey hold up..

I had a 7.5 rear end in my 82 Mustang. Thats what it came with. So I swapped the gears to 4"10's. I won fast street car, back in 83 with it.
HotRod MAg was at PV shopping center, and they shut down Pleasant Valley and ranum off... It was cool. 7.5 is a weak rear end stock, but can be bolstered to handle 500 or 600 HP. It wont hold any more, and even that is pushing it. It also didnt last very long either. (That Summer)

I recomend Ultra Tech Chassis. But there are many good shops out there I guess. It is important to use someone you trust. That first launch, when your lookin at the birds flying in the sky, you dont want to land up on the wall, or other lane...

....What size are they ??? With the HP your going to have you might want to get alloy axles with hardened studs with long open end lugs ... Lew
