I want to make an IRS setup out of a 9 inch ford. Looking for a 31 spline shaft with a u-joint yoke. Shafts will be 8-3/32" and 10-3/8" length. dana 44 outer maybe????
FORD powered sandrail. I hate transaxles so im working on this 9 inch IRS. I wanted to keep the trailing arm suspension. Shooting for 12-14" of wheel travel in the rear. Im running a Mild 408 windsor in the rear(DART 195 heads). Powerproducts drop box to redirect the power to the rear. Im no tighta$$, but im not giving $20,000 for a transaxle that will hold up to a v-8.
Not a ford truck so I posted this in the off-road forum.
how do you like those dart heads i was looking at a set of them for my 306 but ended up with the trickflow fast as cast 190cc heads, did you have to do a lot of work to them other than change the springs before you put them on?
I'll keep you posted. Yes I have considered CV joints, but with my wheel travel goals and axle lengths I think u-joints will do well.
Far as info on the build. I have a torch, grinders, chopsaw, drill press, and small hand tools to keep it square. The one thing I do have plenty of is welding equipment. Rollcage is 1-3/4 DOM tube with 1" HREW pipe triangulation. All the fishmouthing was done with a hand grinder. I'll post some pics soon of the chassis.
I like the DART heads, but the Trickflows have my vote. I bought the heads as a bare casting and put in decent valves and springs. The motor is not real extreme reason being that it should weigh around 1700 lbs when totally dressed so 350 hp will move it better then average.
Found a brake hub to use on my trailing arms. Its a dana 44 hub that uses a 31 spline stub. $50 at local auto store uses factory brake calipers and rotors.
