Engine troubles

Hey everyone,
Got a 72' f250 and im having issues with the motor i think. starts to cut in and out. replaced the fuel pump thinking it might be that. also replaced all the plugs rotar and cap. motor sounds like it runs fine when not in gear but when actually driving it it makes that noise like its cutting in and out. any ideas?

Fuel filter? could not be getting enough fuel. Think basics bro. then go on from there.

Did you replace the points and condenser when you replaced the plugs, etc?

That's correct.

Your new fuel pump should have come with one already installed.

Check all of the rubber hoses coming to the fuel pump from the tank.

There's also a possibility you've got trash in the fuel tank.

Did this start all at once, or has it been getting progressively worse?

plug wires look alright, just replaced the inline fuel filter and it still is doing it. ITs goten progressivly worse. The weird thing is that it will randomly do it in different gears and differnt speeds. Im really stummped on this one.

Exactly what kind of noise does it make?

When one cuts out, it generally STOPS making noise until it picks back up, and then it just makes the NORMAL noise.

Maybe we're chasing our tails here...

its sorta hard to describe the noise almost like its reving then dropping i guess really hard to say it feels like its being held back when it does it and then lunges foward then held back again. if that makes any sense

Okay, that's not necessarily a noise. Sounds more like it's actually cutting off.

Again, did this start all of a sudden, or is it getting progressively worse?

There's a possibility that you have some trash in your fuel tank that gets sucked up against the pickup tube, then floats away.

There's a possibility you have cracked hoses between the pump and tank.

Do you have the correct fuel cap?

Is your electronic distributor a Duraspark, or is it aftermarket?

What carburetor are you running? Maybe even more important, what engine do you have? Manual tranny or automatic?

Are there any other symptoms?

Answer all of this, and one of us may be able to help.

its been getting progressively worse

doesnt look like there are any cracks in the hoses

do have the correct fuel cap but the gasket on it is getting pretty thrashed

i have a holly 2 barrel carb not sure what though specifically

its a manual tranny and not sure bout the distributor.

not really sure of other symptoms and like i said it does it at random points it will run strong then all of a sudden do it, then stop and run fine again and go back to doing it.

Check all of the connections for the distributor and ignition module.

They should have some dielectric grease on them to prevent corrosion.

If it's a Duraspark, try a new module. They're only about 25 bucks.

not sure of the type of distributor
does it make sense why it does it in and out at times? like i said it does it at random times and at different speeds and rpms in different gears.
also could the timing have anything to do with it? it runs really strong and smooth the rest of the time so im not sure if it could or not. if so does anyone know what the correct timing should be? its a 360

Sounds like something is grounding out or there is a timing problem.
Check to see that there are no wires on the exhaust manifold or rubbed raw somewhere.
Also your timing gears or your distributor may be waring out.
Is there an ignition bow external to the distributor or is your electronic ignition all under the cap?
Make sure all your wire connections on you ignition are tight.
