Riderman I have been looking at these silvolite pistons and here is some nice 390 choices. This is page 50. click next page and there are more. Sometimes these are for sale on EBay for decent. I don't know if this helps.
K, this is awsome info! This does help. I've worked on FE's and others for 20 years. I've never "built an over stock FE" untill now. I've built this one, and will build one more. This second one I want "right" for my truck. I'm a SBC man. The cost for performance was not there for FE's. We got off on the wrong foot. Opinions are like A hole's, we all have em. No one is really right or wrong. I have a lot of expeirience with the automotive field, in my past life. I just keep up "to date" enough for my certifications and as a hobby. You are a smart guy thinking outside the box on some issues. That is good for the industry and this site.
PS: For the true blue...The cost for performance is not a joke. The bolt on accessory prices are huge for the FE. They have come down in price though in the last several years. The problem for some is...The high price for a Hi performance FE engine in a 30-40 year old truck\car. I just put over a grand in a running 76 F250 390 engine (bolt on's)that sits most of the time.
Just asking, can you buy Hyperutectic pistons with different pin heights? If you can it will be cheaper and you may be able to get your compression where you want it? I know forged pistons are real expensive, if money is a issue check Hyperutectic pistons out?
I had a 428 in a '76 truck, and if you so much as drove by a pump that dispensed regular gas it would start pinging. I don't remember all the nuts & bolts inside it, but IIRC the 385 series had a much better quench area and could stand higher compression ratios. Feel free to shoot me down, it's been a long time and memory fades...
