Black box??

1978 F150 auto, what is the black box mounted on the upper left side of inside firewall? It is about 4 or five inches square.

no pictures, it is located above the parking brake and is mounted flat against the fire wall.

If it doesn't have fuses ion t might be the wiper delay.

There are three possible black boxes, not one or two.

Does the truck have Cruise Control?

If so, it could be the Amplifier for the Cruise Control as it's located adjacent to the fuse box, just to the left of the steering column.

Or, if the truck has intermittant wipers, it could the intermittant wiper governor.

These parts are marked with Ford ID numbers. There is a four digit prefix, then the basic number, and a two digit suffix.

If the ID basic number begins with 9 = amplifier, 14 = fuse box, 17 = wiper governor.

It's not the wiper delay, that's about a inch and a half cube, connected by a short wiring harness. If it's the same box I'm thinking of, it's the brain for a cruise control

Welcome to FTE

As noted in post #7, these black boxes have Ford ID numbers molded into the plastic covers.

If...it's the cruise control amplifier (brain box), the ID basic number will be 9D844.

If...it's the fuse panel, the ID basic number will be 14A067 or 14A068.

I just purchased this truck a few weeks ago, it has a cruise control steering wheel (tilting) but it has nothing for cruise under the hood. THANKS to all that answered. Will have to see what All I will need to get the cruise up and working.

Ford ID number: D7AF-9D844-AA = Ford part number: D7AZ9D843A .. Cruise Control Amplifier / D7AZ9D843A was later replaced by F59Z9D843A, so the amplifier fits =

1978/91 F100/350, Bronco and Econoline, ALL 1974/89 Passenger Cars. ALL these vehicles with factory installed Cruise Control. Dealer installed C/C is not the same.

Cruise control underhood parts:

Look for the following: 1978/79 F100/350/Econoline/Bronco, and...

1976/78 LTD/Mercury Marquis // 1976/79 Thunderbird/Lincoln Continental Mark IV or Mark V / 1976/79 Cougar/Ranchero/LTD II.

These parts will all work. 1980 and later is not the same.

To discover what's missing, I suggest you get the following:

The 1973/79 FORD LIGHT TRUCK PARTS CATALOG is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for around $25.00.

Since EVERY part is illustrated, the catalog (which has over 3,000 pages) can also be used as an assembly/dis-assembly manual.

Thanks a lot, will know what cars/trucks to look at when I go to the salvage yard. Would think the cars would be more apt to have what I need.

Prolly 85% of the 1976/79 Birds and 99% of the 1976/79 Marks had Cruise.

The other vehicles would be about 50%.

Less than 20% of the 1978/79 F100/350's, Bronco & Econolines had Cruise.

WOW I guess I got a pretty well equipped truck, it still even has the original am/fm radio.

There were two different AM/FM radios: AM/FM monaural and AM/FM Mutiplex Stereo.

Only 6.8% of all 1978 F150's had AM/FM radios, 34.9% had factory A/C.

12.9% had Cruise Control, 13.8% had a tilt wheel...etc etc etc.

These rarity figures (and a LOT more besides what I listed) are from "The Standard Catalog of Light Duty Ford Trucks-1905/2002" / by John Gunnell / Krause Publishing / ISBN: 0-87349-411-3.
