My grandfather-in-law has decided he wants a used 09 F150 King Ranch. The truck looks great, but I talked the Ford factory brake controller up to him and when I called on the truck it doesn't have the factory brake controller. Am I able to add this to the truck and it still function properly?
UGA33, in short yes you can if it came with a trailer hitch and plugs. The factory TBC is about 250 I believe and you will need a dealer to program it. If you do a searh here you can get a lot of info on this subject since it made it's round earlier.
It may have it. The salesman I asked to look for me may not know what he was looking for anywho, so where is it located on the dash area so I can take a long hard look at the pictures again. I mean the truck has every bell and whistle minus the sunroof and navigation.
I have a Prodigy in my 2004 F150 and was so happy with its performance, I bought and instaled one in my 2007 F150 as well.
Its a quality controler, and easy to set, and never let me down.
The instalation was about 15 minutes, much of it to make sure it was in the spot to not interfere with my legs on entry or exit of the truck cab, before I drilled the 2 screw holes.
Got the truck and it does not have the controller. Just called the local dealer and they said that if I am going to add the factory Ford controller that I will have to swap out the master cylinder to. Does this sound right? May be going with the Prodigy if that is the case.

Reason: Info left out
One dealer gave me that same line of BS about replacing the master cylinder. If the truck has the max trailer tow package, the integrated trailer controller can be installed for about $500, parts and labor. I had it done at another dealer who knew what the were talking about.
You need to make sure that the fuse box has the fuse location for the tbc wired, I have an '09 Platimun with the trailer tow package (not the max tow) and mine did not come with the fuse bax wired at the tbc fuse location.

Dealer is WRONG!!
If you want to add the integrated trailer brake controller the truck must have come with the towing package/max towing package from the factory.
Then ALL you need to do then is buy it, Part number for it TBC 9L3Z-2C006-A
Then have a dealership that knows what they are doing program it.
NOTE: The trailer brake system is normally installed at the assembly plant, however, the system can be installed at the dealership but only if the vehicle is equipped with the trailer tow option. This option can be confirmed by verifying the presence of both the 4-pin and the 7-pin connectors at the rear of the vehicle as well as a receiver hitch. If the vehicle is not equipped with these 3 items, then it is not equipped with trailer tow and cannot have the factory Trailer Brake Control (TBC) system installed. On those vehicles equipped with the trailer tow option, the electrical connector for the TBC module is attached to the back of the coin bin/storage tray. If the system is installed at the dealership, the TBC module will be installed in place of the coin bin/storage tray and the Instrument Cluster (IC) must be configured to communicate with the TBC module. Refer to the Wiring Diagrams manual, Cell 95 Trailer/Camper Adapter and Cell 151 Component Location Views for connector and wiring information. Refer to Programmable Parameters in the Diagnosis and Testing portion of this section for information on IC configuration.
* Without a trailer connected to the vehicle and with the ignition key turned to the RUN position, the TBC module display lights up/proves out, but does not light up afterward (will not illuminate with input from the gain + button or slide lever)
* Instrument Cluster (IC) not configured for TBC system
* REFER to DTC U2202 in the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) Module DTC Chart.
Programmable Parameters
The message center will display TBC FAULT if it is receiving communications from the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module, but has not been configured for a trailer brake system. If the message center displays TBC FAULT and there are no DTCs stored in the TBC module, follow these steps to verify and/or modify the TBC module programmable parameter in the Instrument Cluster (IC).
1. Identify the vehicle using the normal Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) process.
2. Select Programming and press the check box.
3. Select Module Programming and press the check box.
4. Select Programmable Parameters and press the check box.
5. Select Personality and press the check box.
6. Follow the on-screen directions.
7. NOTE: The scan tool will display either EQUIPPED or NOT EQUIPPED to the left of TBC-IC.
Highlight TBC-IC.
8. If the IC needs to be configured for a trailer brake system, choose EQUIPPED and press the check box.
9. Carry out a self-test of the TBC module. Refer to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) Module DTC Chart for any DTCs retrieved.

I've been there. This experience applies to my 09 with a build date of 7/09. It happed on the day I picked up my 09 a few weeks ago. I got the same "can't do it" talk when I spoke this their parts & service people but I kept drilling down the information line until I got to the end. They found the info that stated how to do the TBC installation. Here's how it went.
They had done a TBC install in a f250 and found that needed a $600 booster that could be controlled by the computer/TBC. This was after they installed the TBC. The owner rightfully was shocked about the unexpected cost. I asked if the F250 came standard with the advancetrack system like the 09 150s do. They didn't remember. I'm sure having advancetrack requires control of the booster so brakes can be automatically applied. Can someone confirm advancetrack is standard on 250s? I think this is the key.
I then asked him to research the build sheets for my 09 f-150 w/o a TBC and a similar one that came with the TBC installed. The one w/TBC also had the max tow pkg., mine doesn't but does have the tow package and both have fog lights. They first looked up the booster # and found two part #s for the booster: for build dates before 11/30/08 it's 9L3Z2005A and for build dates after12/01/08 it's9L3Z2005B. The boosters for both trucks were identical (9L3Z2005B). He looked into the TBC (part # 9L3Z-2C00006-A) and somewhere along the way found the directions to do the TBC installation. After all that, he felt good about doing the job for me.
I plan on having the TBC installed on my first oil change, maybe sooner. I can't really blame them for their first reaction to my request after the experience the had with the F250 and the surprise $600 controllable booster.
The factory setup would be a little too pricey for me unless I was hauling a trailer daily.
I (personally) would opt for the aftermarket brake controller and spend the extra dollars on a vacation.
My 2009 F-150 Platinum came with the trailer brake controller option......it was an factory option for $230.00
