by any chance do you know if the dealership put a new label on the degas bottle. they lowered the coolant amount and most of us run it at low level with out puking or loosing coolant. if not could be head gaskets, egr valve/cooler, etc. also they have a semi new (i can't think of the word) bottle top cap that is better than the old ones. only like $10-15 from the dealer and you would be stoked if the cap was the fix.

Drive your truck and warm it up. Park somewhere on an incline (lower in front) and pull your EGR valve. If you see moisture, then your EGR cooler has a small leak (very common). Before re-installing, be prepared to clean your EGR valve (instructions in Tech Folder) or better yet, replace it. Be sure to clean the MAP hose and EBP tube also - especially if the EGR valve is very dirty.

If you haven't already, get the latest flash update from the dealership and use 5W40 synthetic oil. Never overfill the oil and make sure you use motorcraft (or Racor or International) filters.

Keep a close eye on battery health - low voltage can cause nagging issues AND lead to more costly issues.

Does the coolant stay low. My coolant level will vary sometimes by 1/2". I think it is a combination of temp. and air in the system. After a 5 to 10 mile drive it always returns to the normal level.

Others have already answered you question about the coolent - I was wondering about the VERY low mileage!! 9000 miles on a 2005 !!!! WOW - It's a wonder the Turbine vanes haven't frozen on his vehicle. Usually they will rust without (at least) normal driving. These trucks LIKE to be driven. Kinda like the old saying: "Use it or lose it"

It doesn't matter if your EGR valve is unplugged or not. A leaking EGR cooler can cause problems (you can still get coolant into the inatke with an unplugged EGR valve). If that is what you have - it needs to be fixed. You have the procedure to diagnose it.

i was thinking the same thing, i thought the miles was a typo.. yeah USE IT OR LOSE IT. haha, last year when my head blew i didn't have money to get it fixed for like 6 months then my "new" turbo only over 1 year old by a little bit got stuck and i ended up having to pay even more money.

Just dropped my 06 off this A.M. for loss of coolant 48500 mi. Dealer says EGR cooler has a small leak, & that they will replace it and the oil cooler as well.

Just wondering, will the replacement EGR cooler go bad just like the original? What can you do to prevent it from failing?

Keep the maintenance up on the cooling system. It is recommended you test the coolant with test strips that you can get at your local Ford dealer. Do this ever 15k miles or so. The main thing you will be looking at is the nitrite level of the coolant. The strip will change colors, and you determine if it is good or not by there color chart. Coolant will not last 100k miles like the owners manuals say. Good maintenance practices will lead to longer vehicle life. Change your oil a little sooner, even if it hurts your pocket book. A clogged oil cooler will often lead to a failed EGR cooler. When the EGR cooler is replaced, the oil cooler should be replaced also (and it will be if it is under warranty). Don't let the truck overheat, and don't pull more than what the vehicle is rated for.
