head liner question

whats under it? if i pull it out is it gonna look like crud or is there a formed panel under it.

reason for asking is it is starting to sag and it REALLY aggravates me.

It is the all steel inner panel painted the same color as your truck. I took mine out and like it a lot. It is a great place for magnetic signs.

theres a formed piece with the headliner fabric attached to it, the all steel is under (technically over?) that. I took mine out and scraped off all the crud left over from the old fabric the PO has ripped off, then glued on some new headliner foam/fabric that I got at my local arts and crafts store, looks really good!

Once it starts, as you know, the sagging gets progressively worse. I replaced mine with a nice one from the JY with one small sag spot. Within a couple of months that spot has grown proportionately. I wish I could take mine out, but my truck had a repaint.

For my '98, I took it out myself and took it to a shop. They did it for like $80.00 and it was an exact match to the sun visors which are still factory. I would look into it.

the original headliner is not glued to the steel headliner, if yours is glued someone other than the factory did that.It is just a molded piece of cardboard held in place by the trim.

For whatever it is worth, I just fixed the droopy ceiling material in an 85 (C word) with some little clear plastic "tack heads" that have a steel coil attached. They screw two or three turns nto the headliners's carboard backing. The clear head then suggests the headliner material's color. With some planning you can get a button tufted look that is not terrible.

These came from JC Whitney (search for emergency headliner repair). $6 for eight pieces. I used 24 on the whole ceiling. I don't love them but they do the job and look much better than the droop did.

NAPA has a similar product but it is bigger, solid black plastic with plastic threaded piece that looked much harder to get started than the sharp metal of JC W's piece.

If bare metal ceiling is not an option then maybe these are worth considering.
