The Project - 48 F6

I sort of just jumped in on the forum and you may be wondering where this guy came from so I thought I’d give a little background on my project and me. I retired from Ford a couple years back and my wife knew I wanted an old truck. The weekend after retiring was our first adventure of several seriously looking for a truck. It took us to OH, IN, IL, and timing couldn’t have been better - there was a blizzard on. After additional trips to IN, OH, PA, NY, CT, VT and RI based on leads, I finally settled on a 48 F6 grain truck in IN (out of NE) we saw on the first trip. It is rust free with one exception, where the lower front left fender meets the running board. I have had a weak spot for these as I grew up on the front seat of my Dad’s 52 F6 dump, and have looked at many over the years. The biggest kick so far was taking him for a ride in it around the yard and watching the memories roll across his face.

I’ve spent the last couple of years trying to figure out what I wanted to do with it, collecting parts, manuals and info along the way. It has a 350 coupled to the original T9 in it, which will be coming out. I had picked up a 332 (Y-block) and a NP540 5od out of a 62 B750, and bought a bunch of extra parts for the 332. Additionally a Watson/ Brown-Lipe aux trans with under, direct and overdrive, countless trips looking for and scrounging lock ring wheels to replace the 2-piece wheels, and an old 24” sleeper. The sleeper was an indirect find looking for wheels; it was stuffed inside an old delivery body at one of the scrap yards. It didn’t want to be scrapped so home it came.
<O
While most parts were picked up in ’07, I’m just starting to get underway due to false starts, and other projects like my wife’s Nash Metro. I need to get moving before too much time goes by and I re-think what I want to do. Recently I switched gears and picked up a “newer” engine with 14K miles and a ’77 F750 wrapped around it. I will pull the 391 and 5spd Clark out, hopefully the NP540 OD will bolt up to the 391. An added bonus on the F750 is the single line Hydrovac brake set-up, storage tank and warning system. Other than front fenders, the F750 body is shot.
<O
The grain box and hydraulics are now off the 48 and other parts are coming off. Reading here gives me incentive to keep going and an opportunity to share info I’ve collected along the way. I guess there’s comfort in knowing others are dealing with the same dilemma’s I am, like single or dual chamber master cylinders, how to mount the engine, and fab linkage for an aux trans.

Bob - It's been clear from your other postings that you know your stuff. Glad to have you hanging around, and glad you're saving a big truck. Are you gonna park that Metro on the back of the '48 to haul it to shows? It'd be quite a sight. Stu

Thanks all, and I'll try to minimize making short stories long.

Good luck with a sleeper 48fordcoe, and keep us posted. The 56 F750 was running a punched 460 with a 5 spd mated to an aux w/od. His sleeper is much newer and was cut down to look a little more proportianate. Inside he had a bench seat to carry passengers. That info I got from a passenger, the owner wasn't around to push for a better look and ask questions. Unfortunately they left the show before I could track the owner down.

The 24" Able is just sitting on mine to see what I need to do for mounting, and get an idea on proportion. My intent is to take the truck to shows and use the sleeper for storage / cargo. We all know how big and roomy the bonus built cabs are... (The visual of Bobj49f2 going to the Dells with 3 in the cab was great.) I will downsize the opening on the sleeper and maybe put a window in between the cab for light or I may leave the rear cab window out and make a pass-thru. I can't bring myself to open up the back of a rust free cab to make a walk... uhh crawl thru.

Welcome aboard. This is a very helpful site, with lots of knowledge folks. Nice looking trucks, I know you will enjoy that "new" truck with the sleeper. That blue wrecker is really sharp, too.
