Sticker says to use a 5w20, and the dealer used reg oil before I bought it. It's an 04 f150 4.6. There were a couple of choices on the shelf and AutoZone as far as reg oil. The Motorcraft 5w20 is a syn blend. I dont know what was in it before the dealer bought it at action. Are the two types THAT much different?
I'd stick with the manufacturers recommended weight. I haven't used the Motorcraft oil but have hear good things about it.
I started using the new Castrol Edge in my vehicles.Did improve gas mileage and made my Jeep run smoother. Says it's good for 15,000 or a year, however I won't leave it in there that long.
There is very little difference between a syn-blend and regular especially when it comes to 5w20 oils that being I have a 4.6 it is a great motor not the fastest or the best tow machine. You can expect long life out of it with just about any 5w20 around. I personally whatever full-syn i find on sale and change it every 5k miles or so. Since you recently bought the truck i would change it out early a few times just to clean any junk out that may be in there. Good luck
I just had mine changed with AmsOil 5w-20.. I only drive 9K a year so I plan to keep it in until my annual inspection... not cheap @ $9 per quart...
Another note, be sure to use a good oil filter, From what i've heard Fram is junk... Most guys on my chevy board go with NAPA Gold filters since they are built by Wix (same as AmsOil filter).
Just grab whatever is on sale at your local Autozone or Pep Boys. You can buy Ford spec 5W20 if you want, but any brand name 5W30 will serve the same purpose. Don't get hung up on running synthetics unless you live in an extremely hot/cold climate that warrants their usage, or you plan on using them for their intended purpose...and that's long duration oil changes. If you're just going to change your oil at 5,000-miles anyway, don't waste your money on synthetics.
If you want to spend it someplace, make sure you back whatever oil you choose with a quality filter. Skip the FRAM, or K&N fancy crap and grab a good Motorcraft one and stick to a regular change schedule
I only us two combinations. Ford dealer Motorcraft change or Mobil1 with Napa Gold or WIX at the tire shop I go. Don't care what the book says, every 3000mi it's gone.

Agreed....which is why people should run it twice as long. The only problem I have with that however, is regardless of how well the oil holds up over time, the filter still plugs up and deteriorates every bit as quickly as it ever did. Moral of the story....If I were inclined to run synthetics, I'd still change my filter regularly, even if I wasn't going to change my oil.

I'd like to see some sort of hard proof of that. I bet it’s not 1/10 of that figure.
I think I will try the Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend for starters. Probably a Motorcraft filter. Oil is $3 a quart, about the same for the filter. Going to do it this weekend, as i am already over the 3k mark. I'm not sure what filter the dealer used, though it is white, it is not a Motorcraft. Could see the name but not the number. Autozone lists 2 filters for the engine, one Windsor and the other Romeo. Does that pertain to WHERE the engine was built?
Save your money on the synthetics, buy a quality 5W20 and use a Motorcraft filter. Some parts stores have Motorcraft filters cheaper the Fram and Purolator.
You cant go wrong with 5w20 Motorcraft. It is a good oil and cheap by comparison to many others. As far as filters, you cant go wrong with a Motorcraft filter either. They are made by Purolator by Ford spec. Ford spec'd the anti drainback valve on these filters specifically for the mod motors. They are also good filters, spec'd for you engine and cheaper than most others. If you are wanting a full synthetic my vote would go to Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol Syntec, just stay with the 5w20.
