FE 360/390 Headers/Camper Special

I have done some reading on this site, its looking like the oil mods & headers are the first steps. While I'm looking at headers i notice they all have a note: will not work with camper special gas tanks Or will not work with camper special or other applications with front sway bar.

Can I remove the sway bar in the front end to make room for the headers? I'm not going to be using the truck with a camper on it.

I can't help you about the sway bar, but the reason they say no to the camper special, is because of the aux. gas tank mounted inside the drivers frame rail. Now if you had saddle tanks (outside the frame) that would be different. A long tube header will have its collector just past the radius arm crossmember next to the shift linkages on the side of the trans (3 spd manual).

Well that makes it simple, the aux tank in the trunk is rusted out.
Ill just pull it out & figure out a fuel storage alternative.
where should I look for the saddle tanks?
Can I remount the stock tank outside the rail?

I have a 71 camper with the auxiliary fuel tank. I put headers on mine then had custom dual exhaust with flowmasters installed. The only problem I had was adjusting the shift linkage away from the collector.
<O</O
I have read on here that the fuel tanks being installed outside the frame rail was a big safety concern.

I'm thinking of ordering
some full length w/ 2 1/2" collectors from flowtech
a Edelbrock muffler that has 2-2 1/2" inlet & 1-3" outlet
From summit, then have the exhaust shop install it.
you think they can go around the extra tank?

Mine are both 3” collectors; when they installed the custom exhaust they turned the driver side right after the collector and went to the passenger side with it then tucked both flowmasters next to the frame rail then went back near the rear axle and bent it back to the driver side and exited on both sides behind the rear wheels. I thought about just straight out the back but decided against it. It turned out really nice. I might be able to find some pics with the bed off.

I had some, they were a dealer option on some truck and had a two or three position valve by the seat slider. Mine had dual tanks along with the incab. There was a toggle switch on the dash and you switched it right or left depending on which tank you wanted the gauge to see, the center position was the incab tank.

This is the only picture that you can see the tank. The otherside is the same.

Hi,
I am having trouble with the headers installed on my 1968 390, they say they cany run dual exhaust because of the aux tank between the rails. I just dont think they want to do all that bending. They say the only way to do it is go to shorty headers...another $600!! I would sure appreciate it if you could email me the info you have on this and how they run the dualk exhaust. Mine is the Camper Special. If yopu could email me pics and a description of how they made them work I could bring it down and show him! Thanks Jerry tataryn1@shaw.ca

This is not a factory installed or genuine Ford fuel tank. Ford never installed a fuel tank on the passenger side of any truck.

Ford never installed fuel tanks behind doors that were riveted to the quarter panels. The first year for F100/350 fuel doors was 1977, the doors were painted body color and were hinged.

This is an aftermarket set up. Dealers sent trucks out to outside suppliers who installed saddle tanks like these. Here on the West Coast, one of the suppliers was the Fey Bumper Co.

Ford did not offer a dealer installed kit to install the 25 gallon tank, it was factory installed only.

The factory valve/switch setup is as described: On the left side of the floorpan adjacent to the seat, is the manually operated fuel tank selector valve.

Under the dash, mounted to a bracket to the left of the steering column, there is a toggle switch used for the dash fuel gauge.

The genuine Ford toggle switch has a chrome bezel (C8TZ10852B) marked: MAIN FUEL TANK AUXILLARY. The main fuel tank is the in-cab tank.

The 25 gallon optional Ford auxillary fuel tank offered for 1967/72 F100/350's mounted on the left (drivers) side, on the inside of the left frame rail.

(Chevy/GMC pickups had a L/S auxillary tank mounted OUTSIDE the left frame rail butted up against the quarter panel. When these trucks were T-boned or sideswpped, the tank split open, gas spilled out, many caught fire. People were trapped in the cabs. The media back then hyped this event almost as much as the exploding Pinto gas tank fiasco)

1967/69 Stylesides: The fuel filler neck/exposed fuel cap is located above the scallop (bumpside) line, in front of the left rear wheel...almost in line with the in-cab's tank fuel cap.

1970/72 Stylesides: The fuel filler neck/exposed fuel cap is located below the scallop line, in front of the left rear wheel, about 1 1/2' behind the cab.

1967/72 Stylesides: Inside the bed, there is a metal shroud that protects the filler neck from possible damage.

Sway Bars: Ford did not offer sway bars for F100/350's until 1973. If a 1972 or earlier truck has one (or two), it was installed by an RV dealer or a front end shop.

Thanks for all the answers. I have solved the issue with the clearance for my 68 Camper Special. By using Sanderson Shorty headers it has eliminated all issues with the transmission clearance, aux gastank etc....It was an expensive lesson as I has already installed long hedman headers and now have to replace them with the shorty's. but now it is straight forward to run dual exhaust
Thanks to all who replied

Use the Sanderson Shorty headers on the 68 Camper Specials, eliminates the need for removing anything and gives you the clearance needed to run the pipes down the passenger side...thus the aux tank does not even come into play
