finally got my engine last night about 7:15. unloaded it and there was a big hole in the top of the crate. got the flashlight out, looked inside. dist. cap broken, march kit brackets broken and oil (power steering) all over the manifold. driver could not figure out why i wouldn't accept delivery. thank you ups.
Sucks but you did the right thing by sending it back instead of fighting UPS. Often the Vendor will leave it up to you to settle, now the Vendor will need to. They own the UPS account and will get much faster results than you could.
As a business owner, we had to cease using UPS because of the numerous shipping damage claims. I have no Axe to grind with them. That was just our experience. When we swtiched to Fed-X the problems went away. Our Product was 70 lbs however, not an engine.
I have friends working at UPS and they agreed with me.

I live in Memphis and have worked in the FedEx hub for a time. I can't believe they are not going to give you the same problems. Maybe the freight side is better, but containers were being thrown all over the place out at the airport.
Sorry to hear about your motor getting damaged. After all the waiting and such its a disappointment I'm sure. I too have had some problems with heavier things with UPS. I like the service where I live. They're prompt and courteous etc. But a couple times now I've had heavier type #60+ items and in particular I remember getting a aftermarket talilgate that came in a little bent etc. Most anything heavy has the box damaged pretty good. Mostly they leave the stuff on my porch! Usually I like that but when I see its damaged I think they shouldn't do that-just leave it I mean. Its an odd policy to me that they will leave obviously damaged in transit merchandise with the recipient. I don't see how they can have such a policy. That doesn't sound like a proper way to behave to me.
On bigger things I've been successful shipping them with a common carrier to the auto parts store where I shop--the NAPA in St Helena. I always ask the owner and give him some money etc--and he's always happy to oblige. I had a motor shipped there and also a large "big" window for my 58. I was able to pick them up at the auto parts store in my pickup and get them back home OK. And I'm not an expert or anything, but the vendors who ship with common carriers use some incredibly strong wooden custom crates and such. I still remember the rear window that came from Texas. It took me hours with a crow bar and a skill saw to break it apart and throw it away and such. Maybe it could have been dropped from a UPS plane and survived it was unbelievably well made. I felt guilty ripping it up.
