I'm getting a squeal when cold from my 97 5.4l 4x4 Expedition. I've power washed the wheels to get any possible brake dust out to be sure, but I doubt it was that since the squeal does not change with the application of brakes.
When warmed up there is no sound...I'm thinking it may be the bearings? The Chilton manual says you can't replace just the bearings - must be the entire hub. And it also says the axle needs replaced on the rear.
Is this true? I have no idea of the bearings on this truck. Thanks!
Do you happen to know where I can find documentation on the process?
Surfcop already gave you a good link showing how to replace the front hubs. Here is a link showing how to replace the rear axle bearings in the Ford 9.75 axle.
I have never heard wheel bearings squeal. They generally produce a low rumble, kind of a whump, whump that changes with vehicle speed. Have you tried lifting and turning a wheel by hand when cold to see if you can find the source of the noise?
Rear wheel bearings are bathed in axle oil, so unless you are low in the diff, a squeal is very unlikely. Could it just be worn brake pads with wear indicators rubbing on the discs?
