428 carb sizing
The 428 is a very comfortable motor to drive. Hard to stall, it just idles off the line if you want it to. From second to third it *really* starts to locomote the truck along. My top speed is limited by the 4.56 gears, so at 55mph on the speedo it's turning a little over 2200 rpm. At any real highway speed (ie 65 and up) it's pretty busy and noisy -- again, due to the gearing. I'm not planning on any long trips with this truck, so extended highway performance wasn't such a huge consideration for me.
If nothing else, I absolutely love the sound it makes through the exhaust!!!! Big displacement rumble.
When I first got the truck I thought the gas tank was going to bleed me dry, until I realized that at 1/4 tank I was only putting in 50 litres or so. It seems like I'm *always* stopped for gas. A bigger tank would be good. As far as fuel economy goes, I'm getting between 11 and 12.7 mpg (canadian) after adjusting for an 11% odometer error (due to tire sizing). For contrast, my 02 Silverado crewcab shortbox with the 6.0l gets typically 13 - 15 city and 18 highway! I don't think that's all that bad.

I had a problem with my 360 where it would boil the gas in the carb. It was particulary bad after I filled up at Mohawk (they put alcohol in their gas). I had the carb sitting on the Edelbrock intake. Based on the advice of a couple of guys (who were the ones to suggest that was my problem) I put a spacer under the carb and the problem was reduced about 99%.
It tended to happen on the 360 after about 30 minutes of running, and it took longer if we were rolling or it was a cooler day. I replaced the 360 with the 410 which has a Ford cast iron intake. I had it happen once on a really hot day, but instead of going on until I shut her down, it ran badly until I got air flowing again (got it moving - had been in slow traffic) and it settled down.
From some feedback on this site I understand it could be a problem with the FEs.
51MFH5 - It was advertised in the buy/sell, but he only had the 410 and a 406, and to my knowledge only the 410 was for sale, but from speaking to a few local guys he had that engine advertised on and off for a couple of years.
I can't say what the difference is between the 410 and the 428, but the 410 pulls very strongly from the idle to redline, and shreds the tires nicely if I am agressive on the launch.
How do you know it has .456 gears? My 4WD is an F100, and it came with an NP435 and .373 gears. In first it can get to about 10mph before I have to shift. If the 250 is similar, with .456 gears you would have to shift out of 1st at about 8mph.
My (very limited) understanding is that they did not put low gears in these trucks because the first gear ration was already very low.

On my truck first gear is unusable (no syncro's anyhow). I start in second and get out and into third as quickly as possible. Tire shredding (on 33" all-terrains) happens in second with very little provocation and third by mashing the throttle down after shifting. If it's wet out I need to be careful getting off the line... With my construction trailer attached which has a light tongue and weighs 2500lbs +-, if I drop the clutch on a white painted crossing line, I just sit and spin until I let off the heavy foot to get some momentum (and get off the slippery painted line).
As far as jowilker's comment, now I'm curious. If it does has the np435, what's the ratio in 4th gear, so that I can use the calculator? I drove today and I think I have the numbers right, 2250 at 55mph (indicated), so 50ish real mph.
Talk to me, smart people, I'm *so* ready to learn! [geez that sounds like a line from karate kid, strike that]

So based on the calculator, at 55 (indicated) or 49.95 (really, but rounded to 50), with 33" tires, I should be turning 2322. I tried 4.11 gears and came up with 2093. Neither adds up.
I'm guessing that my conversion isn't quite spot on. Currently I'm wearing 285/75r16's which (according to miata.net) convert to 32.8". I can't find the site that specified the original tire size right now, either. dagnamit!
Max. GVW 6300lbs = 8.00 x 16.5
Max. GVW 6800lbs = 8.00 x 16.5 or 7.50 x 16
Max. GVW 7700lbs = 8.75 x 16.5, 9.50 x 16.5 or 7.50 x 16
What is your complete data plate and do you have your diff tags?
4.10 rear and 4.09 front on mine. 3500lb front axle
John - I don't know the difference between a 410 and 428 in terms of performance because I have never driven a 428, but I can confirm the 410 is a torque monster. Black streaks have been appearing all around my office.
You need to post some pictures in your gallery, actually both you guys need more pictures. Paul, do you know where I can score a nice 69 grille locally?
Darrell,
You might consider a gear swap if you are running 4.56's. I know it's pricey but I think you and your wallet would be a lot happier with 4.10's behind that 428, good time to slip in a set of lockers or limited slips.
I would post more except that lately every time I try to edit my gallery it hangs explorer and firefox closes immedeately. I don't know what the issue is but I suspect my anti-virus software fights with the java app that tries to load.
I agree with suggesting putting a locker in if Darrell is going to change the gears. I think 4.10s would make more sense, but frankly, so would 3.73s. With that much torque you might as well be able to wind it out a bit and get a little easier cruising speed.
Where are you? What are you going to use your truck for? I think I'd stick with 4.10's if it was going to run larger tires and be a hauler running around the mountains of B.C. but yeah 3.73 would probably work out as well. I've also been looking into a 5 speed swap that I think would be almost perfect for a 428 w/ 4.10 gears.
